ABS issue

so i recently got a 94 with a blown motor and bad a4ld, swapped in a new 4.0 and mazda 5 speed and the only issue i have is the ABS kicks in when coming to a stop, its full of fluid and i have bled the lines multiple times and it still does it.


i would have to say it kicks in from 5mph to a dead stop, i get the normal pulsing pedal and i hear the ABS motor running, what can be next?


EDIT: i did disconnect the ABS unit and i have no issues stopping and the pedal feels normal

Have you tried cleaning off the faces of the abs sensors...they should be nice and shiny.

If your ABS is kicking in then it is because the ABS computer has detected a lock up @ one of the wheel sensors. As ricco750 suggested you need to clean the ABS wheel sensors and tone rings (on the back side of the rotors) to ensure the ABS computer is getting the correct input. If the sensors have accumulated metal shavings or rust then they can become blind and send a lock up signal when no lock up has occurred.

As noted you can pull the ABS fuse to disable ABS braking. If you do this Normal braking is not affected.

ill give it a shot thanks guys. im new to ABS stuff, im coming from a 78 f150 to a 88 brionco II (just had the ABS on the 7.5) so this is all new to me. ill give it a good cleaning and see what happens, its prolly just rusty buildup like you said because the tires never lock up even with the ABS unplugged, the brakes feel perfect

You can sometimes tell which side is giving the trouble, if you brake hard it should pull to one side or the other, if it pulls right the left sensor is detecting the false data, and vise-versa. The other option (if it stops straight) is that both fronts are fine and the rear sensor is signalling wrong.

Don't 91-94 Ex's only have abs on the rear and not the front?

91-92 are rear only, 93-94 are 4wheel

if cleaning it doesnt work. check for loose parts. I was helping a friend with abs issues last weekend and we found his axle nut on the passengers side wasnt torqued down as much as the drivers side and the axle had a little bit(not much) shake. tightened it and what do you know problem fixed
