ABS light after all four hubs replaced

I have a 2003 Explorer XLT 4.6 AWD. I recently had all four hubs replaced due to wheel bearing problems. Everything seemed fine for a few days then the ABS light started coming on. I have not ran the codes yet but will do so soon. I just wanted to see if I could get some input before spending the money on the diagnostic. Any input is greatly appreciated.

Unplug your negative cable from the battery for 15 minutes (not 14...but 15). This will reset the computer, and should clear the sensors assuming they are not malfunctioning.

If it comes back on, take it back to the shop you had install the hubs for the gob-sums of money that you likely paid in labor, and have them correct the issue.

It's very possible that you have a bad sensor on one of the new hubs...it's been known to happen. 1 bad sensor will trigger that, but normally the negative battery cable removal for 15 mins will clear the light. When I did my front hubs, my light came on a day later, did the cable trick...and 15k miles later it hasn't come back.

I did unplug the negative to reset the computer. I left it unplugged for about 20 minutes. It cleared for a few minutes but came on again. The mechanic that installed the hubs is very good but does not have a way to run the codes for me so I have to take it elsewhere and pay $40 to find out which sensor it is.

I'm thinking that you had a hub with a bunk sensor installed. If you can get an ABS code read for $40, that's pretty decent really...I've seen shops charge a lot more for ABS codes.

I had the codes ran and it came back as front left sensor. I pulled the sensor and replaced it with a new one. ABS LIGHT IS STILL ON. Now what?

ya, went through 3 sensors myself, replaced a few good ones too

Got tired of paying to get the codes read found software that could do the same thing as the dealer, it came with a reader and enhanced ford codes. Almost paid for itself.

Jim,

Could you give us some details on the software you purchased? There are many on the internet and some say they will do ABS/Airbag codes, but would be nice to get one that has been used successfully.

i found Bowser Electronics on the web, there are others too. Came with CD and all the cables needed, he provides a code to unlock the Ford Enhanced codes (costs extra). Installed on an laptop and i was reading codes in 5min. . . .any of them.
