I have an 02 explorer V8 and the AC is not cold anymore, i took it in and found out there is a leak in the hose between the drier and the evaporator.

The quote i got for parts and labor to replace the line, new drier, and recharge was 800.00, quote from the dealer was 1000.

First off, is this a ridiculous price?

secondly, is this something i can do myself? i'm not a gearhead, but i can get around a shop.

thanks, Dan.

chit, thats very expensive. . . .they replacing the whole thing?
I redid my whole jeep A/C system (except the Evap) for $300, 4 lines, Cond, JY comp, and had it charged, some of the fittings are hard to get off but not that bad.

If it is only one line, I see if you can find the cost of the line first, usually they are $30-50, or it might be welded to the dryer (it should be replaced anyways if the system has not been running for a while or vented to air). . .one piece guessing about $60. Might want to post a pic of it to help? Then its a matter of swapping it in, after which you need to have someone vacuum it out and refill the system ~$150 or so.
