Is it normal for a 97 xlt to have a light clunk when accelerating?? Its not a huge banging clunk, more like a knock that comes from what sounds like either the gearbox or the transfer case, like something clicking in? It does it most times when accelerating from a standing start , any ideas??

Does it do it while decelerating as well?

no , just when accelerating, it sounds like a light tap with a hammer in the hub caps or something sililar.

Sounds like a u-joint to me.

That's what I first thought but they usually klunk during deceleration as well.

Try lubing the Slip Yoke.

i hear a chunck when i hit the gas too. if im standing still and put more than about 1/2 throttle i hear it, if im coasting and then hit the gas i hear it, and also when im decelerating i hear it when im about to stop. i always thought it was the transmission..

It's the slip yoke.

Thanks everyone for your help. I'll climb underneath her on the weekend and luuube a few thing up and see what happens. And just one final thing. I just wanna say how much this site helps out us Aussie's with our explorer problems. The only real help we get over here is from the ford dealer and we all now how good that can be  Obviously our explorer's differ to yours in some ways but mechanically they are almost identical, and this site helps us with things we want to fix ourselves, keep up the good work!

If you are going to remove the driveshaft and lube up the slip yoke you can search for that on these boards, the proceedure has been discussed recently...

Also dont overlook rear axle wrap up as a cause of a clunk, or a loose transmission or engine mount....

Basically get under there and check everything out, check for looseness :)

i hear the same thing but it happens when i first accelerate in reverse what could it be? any ideas
