Adaptive cruise question - does yours do this?

I have a 2022 XLT with adaptive cruise, stop/go, lane centering.

When I turn my adaptive cruise system on, and do not set a speed, I notice that the gap setting changes on its own. For example, when on the highway (faster speeds) it increases the gap to the farthest without me doing anything. At slower speeds, it will drop down to like 1-2 gap spaces on its own. When I am sitting still, it will stay on whatever setting it was on, meaning it doesn't change.

Is this normal? I thought when you set a gap it stayed set to that no matter what.

I have read the manual, and it specifically says:

"Note: The gap setting is time dependent and therefore, the distance adjusts with your vehicle speed."

Sometimes, but is it normal to change the gap on its own? I have a mustang with adaptive cruise also, and it never changes from what I set it .. BUT it doesn't have the ability to read speed signs like the explorer does, so didn't really seem like comparing apples to apples.

The gap is predetermined by the speed you are going at. Mine doesn't change. I set the gap for 2 out of 4 and just leave it there. The system is even smart enough to allow for a smaller gap if say a faster moving car cuts in front of you but is moving significantly faster, ie. won't slam on the brakes.

Edit: I just realized "adaptive cruise" was mentioned but I am only familiar with "intelligent adaptive cruise", so my comments may not apply.

If I understand it correctly, I think the part of the manual you quoted addresses your question but then I've never just set the gap without a speed because it reads the speed limit signs and adjusts automatically.
