When doug studdard was in Fremont Cali a few mos ago testing on a Dyno with Dave Vanek, using the X charger on a Ranger SOHC, they were able to get 78 RWHP over O.E.M.
410
That was at 6lbs boost, just got off the phone with dave and he confirmed what I said above, doug also as I recall posted the same numbers on this site
Agree 100%
When JV was running EE I went to his shop and looked at the SC (about 50 miles away) The main problem was to develope a system that would work with #1 an engine using HT pistons, and #2 one with a less than steller tranny, thus being limited to 6 lbs boost for the public.
The limitations are the engine and drivetrain as they are built today.
Now that the mustangs have the same engine perhaps this will change with good forged componants etc, is really nothing for engine builders to work with at this time.
Also Lentec is about to come out with some 5R tranny upgrades that address the weak points, we shall see
Yeah but this is comapred to the work thats already been done to the truck to get the boost! Whats a bit more? Why avoid going internal? hahaha In Denver the rule of thumb is it takes us 6-8 psi of forced induction just to get us to what the same engine will make at sea level.
If I went supercharged I would not be happy with the stock kit boost, not for long...
For 5.0's, I've heard you can make 1 to 1.5 HP per cubic inch on a stock motor before you start really needing crazy strong internals. In the case of the 4.0 this would probably hold true also...it's a pretty strong motor. If the 1-1.5 HP per CI rule of thumb holds true, on the 4.0 (about 244 CI) you could probably get to around 330-340 before you need stronger parts. Namely, forged pistons. Those will probably be the first thing to go (unless you have an SOHC 4.0 then you might have some timing chain problems around 300rwhp )
8secsplash on RPS made nearly 300rwhp and 451rwtq! with the 4.0 block bord .030 over, stock crank, stock rods, and a set of flat-top forged pistons (10:1 compression). That was with only a 60 shot of nitrous. Of course he has good flowing heads and a good cam and headers too. Still running the stock computer though.
It's all in the tune though...you can still kill any motor if it detonates even if you have strong pistons.
