Adding Remote Start

2011 Ford Explorer Car Starter

I have a 2011 explorer XLT (no heated seats) and want to install an auto car starter. Which Ford starter should I buy? And how hard are they to install? (Are the supplied instuctions good enough for the average DYI)

Car starter

I know the ford dealership can install a car starter for my 2013 xlt for about 500.00, but i did find an aftermarket one for 300.00, does anyone know if it interferes with the stolen recovery system my vehicle has or would ford void my warranty?
:exp:

Where I come from, dealerships will sell you their remote starter for 5-600$, but will then turn around and get it installed by any aftermarket guy for 300$

What remote starter are you looking at getting installed? There are several OEM plug and play models.

Also be aware that My Key will not work with non-approved Ford remote start systems.

Re:

Looking to get a viper remote start
I don't have Mykey installed

First I am not aware of a "stolen vehicle recovery" system by Ford so no issue there because it doesn't have one unless its aftermarket. I don't think any Ford dealer would install any non-Ford remote start system.

Putting a Viper system in the vehicle will require hard-wiring it in and a separate FOB.

What options are you after exactly?

I'm not sure this will help, but when I had my 2014 Limited it came with the remote start by Ford. I had LoJack installed afterwards. I had 3 notifications within 4 months that my "vehicle may have been moved without my permission". These were all false notifications but I never knew the root cause of these notifications as I didn't have the vehicle long enough.

Due to those notifications we opted not to instal LoJack on our current ride. Good luck to you!

The xlt came with a LoJack type of system installed
I am not sure what it's name is
Maybe I will forget the viper and just have the dealership
Do it, cold weather is coming, I need it
Thanks

That's def. not factory/oem. The distance required for remote operation is going to be the key to what system you need. The factory system which the vehicle already has is 300 feet line of site. The one way and two extended range systems which require additional hardware have 1000 ft line of site and then there is the phone/internet system which you can do from the other side of the planet.

BTW if any dealer is charging $500 to "install" the OEM equipped remote starter they are ripping you off. The basic remote start that the EX can come equipped with from the factory already exists in the vehicle. It just needs to be turned on with dealer software which takes 15 minutes. Then you just need a remote start key and if not already equipped a $25 hood pin.

So can I just purchase the key with the remote starter, have the key recut and then go to the dealer to have the key programmed?

Yes you need an IKT (key with the FOB built in) that has the remote start button in addition to the others. If you don't have a hood pin you need one and it needs to be installed prior to activating remote start. Get your key blade cut and if you have two existing keys you can program the new key to the vehicle yourself and if not then the dealer has to program the key to the vehicle.

Once that is all set you can go to the dealer and have them turn on the remote start feature. The range with the IKT is listed by Ford at 300 feet.

My website www.fordpimods.com and my FB page www.facebook.com/fordpimods has information as well. On FB I actually show the process the dealer can do to activate remote start.

Thanks for jmr061.

Is there a wiring harness or connector under the hood for the hood pin switch to plug into or would it have to be hard wired into the ignition?

It should have the wiring present already. Front driver side under the hood just forward of the air box look for a plug in the plastic. This is where the hood pin goes. There is more than likely a harness plugged into it.

I am glad I found your post JMR061, (Jason)!

I have been looking for something/anything that would show/prove that there was a way to do this.

I went to the dealership here in the San Francisco Bay Area and the service writer said it would be over $1,100 for the remote start to be installed on my wifes 2014 Explorer without the rear power lift gate.

So according to the video you posted, all that is needed is:

1. Hood pin (Later today I will look to see if it is already installed)
2. Bring the vehicle to Ford for them to program the computer like on your video.
3. Key with remote start on it. I would like 2 keys! (Which Key do I need?)

(I have the original 2 keys for the car)

Welcome to the Forum strnge.:wavey:
Do you have the IKT (integrated keyhead) or the IA (Intelligent Access) keys?
It would be helpful if you added the model of your Explorer to your profile so that it always show in the margin.

Peter

She has a remote head key. (IKT)

I will have to look at it in 4 hours when I get home to see what the key looks like and which model Explorer she has.

There are many dealers out there that need to be educated that is for sure. Yours is by far the highest estimate I have ever head of though. Yes you need the 4 button remote start IKT. I have a couple and the hood pin if you need it.

Any questions let me know.

Jason
