Adding stock sub to 98 Mounty?

The Mach HU is supposed to be 160 watts, 80 to the sub. I don't know about compatibility of some Mach and the subs, there have been a ton of radios made since the first two Pioneers, all having the same three connectors in the back. I suspect some parts mixing has occurred in some repair shops, like the buttons.

Since my truck was not originally equipped with a Mach head unit should I replace the speakers? I get decent sound out of the speakers, just no bass ;) But I have that figured out.

The speakers are not unique, change them if you have a different taste. The Mach doesn't send low frequencies to the door speakers, the sub gets them all. Some people like that, and some don't. I haven't tried my new sub yet, I have to do three amps and much wiring first.

Well its 90% done. I ran all the wires today. Spliced the new pigtail on and tap spliced the green/purple wire to the green/purple off the back of the HU.

All the holes for adding the sub are not fully prepared for the sub in a non sub truck. The two top bolts that hold the sub box on use clip nuts that snap right in. Now the front bolt screws into a steel boss that is not tapped in a non sub truck such as mine. I bought a 6m tap to fix this :)

Now the floor bracket that holds the bottom of the box in at the back is not drilled either. The sub bracket fits nicely into a divot on the floor pan so alignment is easy.

Wires for amp running forward.

They run up to the kick panel and the connector snaps onto a post that is already there. Yay for stock!

So after getting this far I turned the radio on and held a speaker up to the two wires for the sub and I got sound!! Now I just need to go get a subwoofer and fill in that hole in the back of the box.

mate that's a great job. Don, I have been in touch with Dave Miller and he is a gentleman. He got in touch with me through my Ebay antic's . and he's given me hope Cheers Barry

Mate, I can see a problem if your going OE and that is you'll need to pull the sub out again to mount the sub speaker but then you probably knew that anyway LOL cheers Barry

Depends on what kind of sub I go with. If I install a stock replacement sub I'll have to remove the box. I'm having trouble finding a sub that fits at the moment and finding one that isn't a bajillion watts and just too much to push for the stock amp.

If I don't find one that fits soon I'll have to buy that one. Thanks for the lead!

I bought my 8" Goldwood sub from http://www.partsexpress.com/ . High quality sub with a low price

I emailed them a couple times with questions, and they answered quickly.

Did that sub fit in the box without an issue? How much was it? I was thinking about getting an MDF spacer of about 1/2" to an 1" to further expand my options.

Truck is all back together now. Got the boss tapped and the hole drilled. Everything is stock except for one splice tap. :) Now I just need to find a sub.

I carved out the hole in my enclosure to fit that sub.

Have you thought about a grill? The setup I have would fit behind the OEM grill with a few mods, like carving out the opening, and bending the metal insert. It would not be possible with a spacer. With the new sub I just got, I think I have to go back to the drawing board.

I do have a couple tan ones, with one metal insert, that are in subpar shape, if you want to experiment.

I think your first gen box had a smaller sub stock? My box has a hole for an 8" already. I'm thinking about getting a 1" MDF spacer so that I could fit many more types of subs. Now to track down a spacer, I would rather buy than waist my time making one. :p If you look at my box I can't actually carve out the hole any. Its shaped funny.. but I think the stock cover would work with this box with even a 1" spacer. But I'm going by memory on a truck that I've owned for two weeks :p

Those are completely different housings, one has two amps, and the plastic is different.
