Aerostar keyless entry system.

I've got a 1996 Aerostar 3.0L with electric door locks but no key fob. What are the chances it has a keyless entry system? How would I know? If it's a simple as buying a set of the proper key fobs and programming them, I'll give it a try. Anyone ever program a set of key fobs?

Are there any LED lights to indicate that there is an alarm system installed? Even if there is a factory system, I doubt that it's still working. You could go to an alarm shop, and get an estimate for a basic system or install an aftermarket system yourself.

I've seen several Aerostars with electric door locks and just wondered if they were part of a package that included keyless entry via key fobs. It would only make sense if that were the case although it is convenient to unlock/lock all the doors from one spot.

I looked at a '97 a couple of weeks ago that still had working key fobs to open the door locks. I was hoping I could get a response from someone with some experience with the factory system.

I haven't seen any LED indicators anywhere.

There was some rust on the 3.0L '97 I looked at last week and the inside was in fair condition (146k miles). It had dual air, rear buckets and fiberglass running boards. Last price I saw on it was $1600 - gone now.

Tonight, we looked at a 4.0L '97 (w/o AWD) dual air, rear bucket seats & 153k miles for $1400 fair conditions. The service engine light came on while I was driving it and I forgot to bring my code reading with me. I have no experience with the 4.0L - is it as long lived and trouble free as the 3.0L?

The 4.0L engine is the same OHV as used in the Explorer. They last a long time, and don't suffer from the same issues as their newer SOHC does (read about the SOHC timing chains & cassettes). You might want to check for leaking intake manifold gaskets if you detect P0171-P0174 codes.
