I have a Pioneer amp and sub mounted ( basicly ) in the stock location.
I don't know any model numbers, but they are well matched.
The sub moves just fine and there is zero drag on the voice coil.
Here is my delema. The sub craps out very quickly. At moderate volume if sounds fantastic. But if I jack the sub out it all goes to crap.
I am thinking possibly it is due to the box the sub is in.
I modified the factory box to make it work. Possibly not enough air or something. Those of you running this config. how has it been for you ?
Any thoughts on how to clean the sound up ?
Suggestions ?
Comments ?
Oh, putting the subs any where else is not an option.

Whats the amp rated at? It may be underpowered for the sub that size. So at high volume it will distort and sound like crap.

Nah, If I am not mistaken the sub is 350w and the amp is 350w as well.
I have it bridged to give me more head room.
Oh, polarity is correct.

It could be a box/encloser resonance problem. Is it completely hollow or do you have it stuffed with the cotten stuff? If not, you might try getting some and see if it helps.

*qwik note: you can get the stuff at Wal-Mart in the fabrics department. Its like matting or something like that, but same stuff audio places use but for a much cheaper price.*

Yikes! Why not look into the Q-Logic Box. Fits in the stock location and will hold an 8 or a 10 depedning on which one you get. I think Crutchfield carries them. Good Luck.

PS- Hope you're around this weekend, I ordered my tranny stuff :D

That box is the JL box and should be quite fine, and what sub is that? I would spend the money on a quality subwoofer JL, audiobahn, rockford, Alpine RS, etc. Like I said the box is fine, I would wonder about the subs quality and the amp (is it rated 350 watts RMS or PMS). If its PMS then you need a new amp.

Don't think so. He said it was the factory sub box modified to fit the sub.

Sounds like a box issue to me. I'd spend the $200 & get a qlogic box or have a box made. You will need to get the box spec for the sub too. It might need a bigger or smaller box then you can fit there.

Youre right...JL makes one that looks like it (the cheaper JL box). I have the JL stealthbox (the upscale one). I would recommend going with either the stealthbox or the qlogic like jason said.

My advise would be to add a 1/2 or 1 farad capacitor in-line before the amp OR check the model number of the sub itself and find out if that specific model is designed for a ported enclosure. The subs designed for that specific box are a Type 1 design (sealed enclosure).

For that little amp I wouldnt see the need for the cap. I run much more power than that and have no drops in my charging.

There is no need for a cap.
I see no reason to buy a new sub.
I am not made of money.
The q-logic box makes more sence.
The box IS stuffed with the factory cotton stuff.
I do need to make a correction. It is a 400w Pioneer sub, but it is a Kenwood amp.
and it is 500w or 550w.
The sub and amp were given to me. From a very honest trustworthy ( and kind ) friend.

The last time I looked, the q-logic box was expensive. In about 2 weeks I am going to start building my stealthbox for that location in my explorer. If you want to try to build your own I can send you my pics after that and tell you where I failed and how to make it better (if i screw up somewhere, which I don't intend to)

Also, here is a link to the forum post that inspired me to build my own stealth:

I bought my JL stealth box ($450 at all the stores) for $150 off of ebay. I had alot of patience waiting for a good price.

ICU,
PM me when all is said and done and let me know the results.

I got my JL Audio vantage for $179 at my local car stereo place. The Q-Logic box can be had for $169 at thezeb.com.

Any way I can get the schematics for this? Exact measurements?
