after market sub with stock head unit?

Can you wire an after market 2 channel amp with the stock head unit. I have a '98 with the mac system in it. My amp in the cargo are does not seem to work and the sub back there is blown badly. I'm wanting to wire a after market sub and amp to replace it. I have a box with 2 ten inch subs in them. Has anyone done this and have and advice?

Use an amp with speaker level inputs or buy a rca line output converter.

i second gettting a rca output converter, leave the spi along.
