I have tried to do a search and had a hard time finding info for our year in upgrading the stock Sub in the rear. Anyone ever do it? What did you go with and how were your results? Anyone ever go bigger? Is it easily doable? I have done small mods in Mustangs to go from 5"x7" speakers to 6"x9" but not on stock subs. I am adding a new head unit and will be running wires for cameras so though about while being back there to upgrade the sub.

Thanks

I believe the sub is an 8". I remember see'ing a thread in the 3rd gen forum about upgrading it to a 10" but I'm not sure that would work on our 4th gens. From the photos it looked the same. I would probably just go with a nice aftermarket 8" since you're not upgrading the wiring or the amp.

Edit:
Here is a thread about replacing the 8" with an aftermarket 8". There's also a link in that thread to the guy that upgraded to a 10" in the 3rd gen.

2006 Explorer - My stock sub Replacement with Rockford 8"

It's an 8" sub stock. With some modification, a 10" will fit. The sub box is the same as the 3rd gen.

The hardest part is finding somewhere to put the amp if you're planning to replace the stock amp.

Try this

Thanks guys. I thought I had replied to this earlier but I guess I didn't. After I had posted this question I found the audio section and saw the links yall gave. I will probably pull the side panel off when I run the camera wire this weekend and pull the box. I will take my time and reinforce the box and try to drop a 10" Rockford in there. I have an old small MTX amp that was pushing two 12s so I may and try to hide that amp to run the 10.

Let us know how it goes.
I haven't gotten in there yet, I'm still deciding what amp to get, but I'm worried about the space, since I can't mount it under any of the seats.

If it fits, could you let us know the model of your MTX?

This is what I'm looking at so far

Make sure the 10” has the shallowness and will work well in that small of an enclosure.

I’m almost positive you could fine a place to tuck in that Fosgate compact behind the panel.

I am a picture ***** so you guys will know everything haha. The amp I have is really old. It is a MTX Blue Thunder 75Wx2 that I had in like 1999. Not even sure if it still works.

Probably a decent choice, but I’d get the P3sd4-10.

You are right. I had looked at so many subs and forgot there were two that were similar from the same brand. The 4ohms one was the correct one. I will fix my link.

We’ve all done it ;).

the very small airspace inside that box will make that 10 suffer and make its output way less than the factory 8" and what amp do you plan on using because if you get a dual 4ohm sub make sure your amp puts out max power at 2 ohm... if you are getting a 1 ohm stable amp get the dual 2 ohm sub to be honest you are better off saving the money and getting a cheaper shallow mount kicker comp svc 4ohm 8" sub and using the stock amp.... the bass output is not worth the money

this is how I dealt with this problem

No matter what sub you choose, any aftermarket amp would be better than factory, since you’ll have more tuning options. If you are just looking for bass to round out the sound quality most people don’t want to give up what little cargo space they have.

but also remember that any aftermarket amp will require.... replacement head unit with RCA's or a line out converter the stock amp uses a 6vdc turn on signal so you need another amp turn on source and power wires to supply the new amp and even with a lower power amp at the distance from the battery its probably advisable to go with 4awg wires.... if you are ok with the sound stock dont open all those cans of worms and just replace the sub with a cheap pyle or lanzar 8" for $15

I am installing a Kenwood DNX995S today. Not sure if it has the inputs. I am not a fan of the factory sound. I can not hear the sub at all. While running lines for the cameras I was going to pull that panel and have a look. I have a MTX 75X2 Blue Thunder Amp I was going to look at using. Many a years ago I had it wired in to two 12s and it was really nice. In the end I may just go with a 8" to keep it simple but I never liked going stock.

Stock? Meh, no thanks ;). I’ve been meaning to rob a few sub boxes from the pick and pull and fiberglass them to larger cubic feet.

While installing the camera wires and head unit I got distracted:

That box actually looks fairly big. I’m sure with a small cu.ft sub and decent power it could sound pretty good.
