So, after a Flowmaster cat-back exhaust, a MAC intake, consistant oil changes, and new spark plugs; I decided to do a long-term test of my gas mileage.

Over the course of 1667.0 miles, I used 110.0 gallons of gas. Some quick math shows an average of 15.15 MPG.

This was recorded over the past couple months, driving in-town, in heavy traffic, and on highway trips. Various brands of gas were used, but were always "regular" 87 octane. Sometimes the X was light, and sometimes I had a few passengers/cargo/hitch mounted bike rack. I have a fairly agressive driving style.

Overall, I'm not impressed with the results. Before I began the test, i figured an average of 16 mpg, so I wasn't far off. I suppose 15 mpg average for my drivng style isn't too bad.

Unfortunately I didn't do a BEFORE test. Sorry

PS - Today I added a can of Seafoam, and will continue to monitor the mileage results after. I'll post if there's a signifigant change in mileage.

I average about 13.5 mixed with my 98 5.0 AWD. I floor it a lot. I have a drop in K&N with larger holes in airbox. Everything else stock.

I just did a highway trip of 240 miles with an average of 18.7 mpg. Not too bad I may say with the cruise set at 76-77 mph.

I say your not doing to badly. You average almost 2 mpg over me. I cant remember, did you get the 50 series SUV? No drone, right?

Yes, I have the cat-back kit, which includes the "Big Block" 50 series. No droning, but a little at 80mph w/ CC on.

You've got a good point. It's interesting to see how your mileage compares to mine.

Thanks

-Brad

My last highway trip I got 19.6 mpg. I use 93 in my X all the time. in the city (very stop and go) I get like 15 or so.. you burn a lot of gas just sitting in traffic.

'96 5.0 2wd, 50/50 highway-city driving, always carrying at least a couple hundred pounds in the back:

When I first purchased it three years ago, I was averaging 17.5 mpg. This was with 15" aluminum wheels and 235/75/15 tires. Not long after that, I swapped on 16" steel wheels with 30" tires, this instantly dropped my mpg down to 15.5.

Over the next couple of years, my X started getting more sluggish, and mileage had dropped down to +/- 13.7. :(

With a recent spark plug/wire change, and the installation of a KKM, the mileage has jumped back up to +/- 16.0-16.5. I haven't put enough miles on it for a very accurate reading. I may SeaFoam it sometime in the near future to see if that helps any.

But it is a SUV, it carries all my gear, and I can still stomp it to pass when I need to, so anything above 15/16 mpg is fine with me. :)

15.whatever mpg mostly in town is good. Intake/exhaust mods gain you a little mpg, but not that much (not enough to pay for themselves anyway).

I was getting anywhere from 16-18 mpg. Last fill up though, 13 mpg. Wasn't happy about that. But that's what being heavy on the throttle for 4 hours does. Also it's time for to clean the MAFS.

I don't have a 5.0, but something to base it on.

my brother gets about 13 with a real fat tune.

i average about 16.5 and i beat the hell out of it with more mods than most.

after my new custom cam and crap i don't expect it to do nearly as well.

on the highway right now with the e-cam and bolt on air flow stuff i can see as high as 20 quite easily provided i don't drive over 90 (which i have a tendency to do) going 100 or so really hurts the gas mileage.

nice to see that you all get great gas mileage, i get about 11 mpg with intake/electric fan conversion 2" lift and goodrich all terrains inner city and some mild highway

96 XLT 5.0L V8 AWD
-lead foot on pedal (broke pedal yesterday....)

I think I may have found your problem. :p ;)

i get about 14.5mpg driving however... mainly freeway driving at 80mph...

im almost always gunning it at some point(its fun to see 5k rpms :) )

i have a 4.0, but w/ my completely city based commute i'm getting only 11mpg :(

I find it strange that these California blends that supposedly help the environment are actually decreasing the mileage which, in turn, is requiring you to burn more fuel.

Other states that dont have CA's strict blend standards are doing much better. I have had friends verify this for me when traveling. They see a significant gain in MPG out of state.

With that new a truck and that poor mileage, I think you have a problem.
