Greetings all,

I just bought a used 1999 Explorer XLT with what I believe has the premium sound package. It is AM/FM/CD and it has the controls for the back seat as well (I was assuming that made it the premium package according to the manual I have, but the speakers sound to good to be 6w x 4)

I read the sticky about the factory stereo's for these vehicles and I saw that after 1998 the amp was incorporated into the radio for the premium systems. I want to get an aftermarket head unit and was wondering if the speakers are going to sound like poo poo because of the power output.

I was planning on getting an Alpine CDE-9845 head unit and it rates 16 watts RMS/45 peak x 4 channels. The sticky says the premium system is 20w x 4 and I am guessing that is with the amps help since the base system was 6w x 4.

So let me know if I have made any wrong assumptions and if this ALpine head unit along with the factory speakers is going to sound horrible.

Thanks
John
