As operahouse told me I disconnected the compressor and found that this is the culprit of my problem. When the engine rpms go to 1k it is because the clutch in the compressor has kicked on then stops after a second waits two seconds then kicks on again. Is this something I should try and fix or is the compressor shot and I need to have a professional fix it?
This forum is so helpfull I just hate spending money.
Thanks

From what you describe it sounds like the a/c system is low on referigerant due to a leak.
