Well, im new to this scene, and i was talking with one of my buddies who mods his cars and other things. He told me to get a "quick + cheap" Hp increase, would be to Gutt my Mass Airflow Sensor *MVP?*.. I was wondering who has done this, if any, and was/would it be a good thing to do.

Thanks, Justin

Don't go tinkering with the MAFS, if you start modifying the sensor it's going to cause your truck not to run right. The computer is calibrated to everything in the intake system and if you start modifying things without knowing what your doing you could mess something up. There are larger, aftermarket MAFS available on the market, thats a much better way to go.

Justin, be careful!! That sounds like an old tip relating to much older MAFs which had restrictive screens in them. Our newer models don't have that type of design.
Those older ones had a sensor(wire) which ran accross the entire diameter of the opening. The screen was to protect the wire. Newer MAF's have a smaller hole with a wire through the middle of it. The airflow through the small hole is what is being measured. The ratio of the two areas is known, so the PCM calculates the air mass based on what goes through the small opening.
Don't upset the balance of flow through each of the two paths. Basically, the cost of a new MAF is less than what a professional would charge to modify a stock MAF.

I've never heard of gutting a MAF. If you were to gut it why not just get rid of the whole thing? Buy a 70mm Pro-M from EE.

You're probably referring to the old speed density sensors on late 80s and early 90s mustangs and f series. they're something different all together.

Dont go messing with the MASS. I tried messing with mine once, and after about 3 days I found out that the truck was running WAYYY lean on fuel. Granted, it ran better, and had alot more getup and go. I took it out after finding it was running lean, then less than a month later I blew the engine.

Wow, thanks guys. im not gonna mess with that. Also, if you were to upgrade your air filter, wouldent this mess up your MAF? O r would it "lern"? One last thing, could you guys give me some sites for MAF's If there not too much i will buy a new one with my KKM Air kit. :)

Thanks Justin

The "gutting the MAF" meant simply removing the metal mesh screen from the inside of the MAF. Corvettes had this. The new ones might too. It was a pretty common mod in the vette scene. I never thought it did much...I generally thought it to be a waste of time.

FYI the aftermarket MAFs dont have a screen.

www.explorerexpress.com is probably the cheapest you'll find. Any airflow mod you do you need to reset the battery (unplug negative for 15 minutes). The computer will relearn and adjust what needs adjusting.

Thanks guys, im going to go aftermarket if anything, i appreciate the quick responses.
saved a big headache :fire: and money

Thanks Justin

Let me also recomend the PRO-M MAS from EE.
The folks at Pro-M are awesome.
There is a noticable diferance.
Add on a MAC intake you you will be sportin'

you can buy a pro-m for 150 bucks dont bother causing problems for your self and gute your maff. if you want you can get a stock one off of another ford and then get a chip to make it work.
