Airaid CAI

Hi thePUNISHER,

Would you describe the K & N CAI sound please. Is it like how Fish4five described the Airaid CAI?:
"Well I finally got the airaid installed and I would describe it as just enough. Perfect for what I was looking for. You can definently hear the turbos now, expecially when decelerating they give the spooling down whistle. You can also hear them more while accelerating but the decelerate is great. It also gives it a throaty throttle sound without being too loud."

I would love to hear a video clip of it if that isn't t to much trouble...

I don't think the sound would be any different between the two due to the intake design both stock and the CAI. The only reason I went with the airaid was Livernois said they had better results with the EB with their intake? I was going with the k&n till they recommended the airaid. They all both so maybe they make more $ on the airaid.

As far as a video I don't think that it would pick up the sound. It's noticed more just after a slight excelleration and upon decell. Just revving in neutral you only really hear the increased throaty sound. There are a lot of videos on you tube that show the difference between stock and the CAI. Search for taurus CAI on YouTube and you'll find some showing the difference. This is where I found it to make sure I didn't think it would be annoying. I told my wife that I had done something different to her car and asked her to see if she could tell what I'd done. She just said it sounded more sporty sounding but couldn't pin point what it was. She liked it better with the CAI, but said it took her awhile to figure out what it was and that she wouldn't have probably noticed if I hadn't said anything.

Worth asking since you said it sounds better. The videos i've seen of SHO's and F-150's with intakes the turbos are still super quiet. So I expect little change then. Probably not going to dump ~300 bucks for one then.

Thanks for sharing that video, that is one I haven't seen yet.

I totally understand and didn't mean to imply you were my deciding factor to buy or not, just that I'm not sure if this is what I'm looking for. $'s per HP return for intakes are pretty low and it still doesn't sound like you can hear much spooling

This is obviously a much larger turbo, but an idea of what i'd like to hear a little of.

I know a lot of people will say that the turbos on here are small, but they should still make some noise. My Audi A4 has a k03 which is pretty much the same size and makes more noise then two on the Sport.

One thing i will say, the airraids intake looks very nice, just wish they'd ditch the factory ribbed coupler for a smooth abs or silicone sleeve!

Livernois said the only way to really hear them would be down pipes and exhaust. Being its the wife's daily driver I wouldn't go that far so the intake was the only compromise for me. I would love to do them if it were mine but this is the only mod I could get past head quarters if you know what I mean.

Oh another thing that I noticed as I drove it today for a lengthy time was the BOV releasing into the intake track. Kinda made you think what was that noise the first couple of times you hear it, kinda a popping sound. I couldn't hear this with the stock intake, though not something I would call a pleasing sound like the BOV releasing to the atmosphere.

Yep thats me..... Hows the race truck comin these days.... ? Dont get on the forums too much as of late....

Cool, did you ever end up getting a Raptor? Or did the Sport win out?

I dyno'ed 789/871 and ran a 9.89 @ 138.78 back in April at Cecil, so the HD truck has reached my next major milestone! Now just enjoying it on the street, and hopefully backing up another 9 this fall.

naa no raptor. I almost pulled the trigger...but our edge has over 100K and we needed something with a 3rd seat......it was just more practical....

other than the intake ill probably throw a livernois tune on the sport and leave it be from there.... I wanted to put a set of 13 SHO wheels on it but the wheels will cost over $1K then $250/ea to widen them at weldcraft...doesn't seem worth it.

good to see the Harley is flat out getting it done!!

So finally decided that this intake needed some more air and I was itching for a project so I decided to dremel out some of the plastic in the grill to allow the intake to get some fresh air. Getting the grill off was a b**** ! Here are some pics I snapped. I haven't really driven the car too much yet. I can say that it doesnt have any issues surging or with drivability. I was hoping the new air wouldn't upset the MAF. Everything runs nice and smooth and im sure IATs are much lower now.

Are you concerned about driving in the rain? I think water will definitely get into the box.

Do you have the ability to datalog? I would be really interested in seeing what the intake temp rise over ambient is with this setup. I made my own similar setup for cheap but without the air blocker. Would be nice to know how much of a difference it actually makes.

Just an FYI, the 3.5EB in the explorers use a MAP system, so there is no MAF to worry about.

i think its too far recessed to see anything more than a few drips.

good to know thanks I didn't know that! I can block it off again and go log IATs, than do the same with it opened up.

Sorry, i wasn't clear. I assume you mean block off the hole. I'm talking about the large blocker in the engine bay. My homemade setup is basically a cone filter where the OEM box was with some custom piping without any blocker between the filter and engine. So I would just need IAT values as your setup currently is when you are driving down the road for little while so the temps stabilize.

I think i was seeing 15-20*F rise over ambient with my setup which i believe is due to the lack of blocker. I'll need to double check this evening on my way home from work.

Wow awesome mod just like the zoodad mod for the 6.0l powerstroke! With this work with the factory intake?

Yes it will. There a nice cutout already for the intake in the front end, its just almost totally blocked off by the grille. In the stock configuration I'm sure some air can snake its way up and in, but not nearly as much I have coming directly through now.
