Airbox mod with cold air intake for 4.0L V6

Yea I want to keep the box for the heat shield and I heard you could get a pretty cheap stock box from a junkyard. So the new piping will free up some airflow and a new filter will help?

...The guy was awesome in helping me find the exact intake parts for my Pathfinder.
Off Topic here, but....
I just looked at the pictures of your pathfinder...You got one damn good looking pathfinder! :salute:

About as fast as I post a comment there's another post :D
--Yes it will free up some air flow, and I think because of that, I have some gains, but I do need more holes drilled in the airbox. The K&N filter definately will help more, and the airbox mod will definately do good on it.
--Looking at Caldwell's X's airbox mod, he's got a lot more holes drilled in that box than I got!

I can't find a replacement stock airbox. No 02-05's in my area's junkyards.

Best reason to do this: Gas Mileage increase!

That is my goal too. I know the replies come in too fast. The snorkel would probably be the second type of cool anyway so I guess it doesn't matter if I have holes in the airbox.

where did you get the piping for the intake?

Nate,

the holes that you see in my airbox on the original thread, are none existent lol
i just have 2 large holes in the front of the box, and kept the holes on the fender side of the box...

Well I am going to get some more holes in the box. Post up a picture of your explorer's airbox. Then I can get an visual to go off of.

Autozone

Airbox Mod has the exposed front and there seems to be some nice hot air being sucked in to my intake. May just come up with a heat shield to put in front of the airbox to see if I can reduce the hot air being sucked in.

Update on heat shield: canceled

Just read that hot air does good for fuel economy. Anyone agree or disagree?

before a can of worms get opened on this...

Nate, continue working on a heat shield for your X. the cooler the air the better. cooler air has more oxygen density, which allows for better combustion of air and fuel... thus creating more power...

Well there are a two difficulties on creating the heat shield. There is very few anchor points, and not much room. I will have to see what I can create for my X. I could drill some anchor points in to the airbox. Well I'll be making a trip to lowe's, after fumbling through the garage for materials, to see what I can find.

I'll see if I can find that post on hot air and fuel economy.

ice,

Thanks!! Its now my daily driver.

Danny,

you can always email tech@spectreperformance.com

Their website is very good. They have alot of different parts, reducers, multiple bends etc.

Also found autozone, advanced auto, and pepboys have alot of different parts. Amazon even sells their stuff now as well.

just emailed SPECTRE about helping us with a custom intake pipe solution, and sent this thread to them...

so hopefully, they will be able to help us out...

So you all know if you don't want a loud explorer don't do this. I've noticed my explorer sounds a lot louder. It sounds like it also has a turbo. :D

When i had my K&N Intake on my Red X, I could hear it whistle kinda as i punched it, you will espically hear it in the winter time if it gets cold where you live...

Utah...of course it gets cold here! :D lol
Just one-two more planned mods left for the year on my X :(
Next Clear Corners, and...
Around Christmas (see if I can get a sale) maybe it'll be time for some rims and tires.

squeeze in the exhaust...

good gains, and you will be quite happy i promise lol...

intake/exhaust combo is one of the best / simplest investments you can make in my opinion...

thats why i really wanna get some sort of intake set up done on my X, like my 03 had...

Nate,

in your sig, i think you could now offically change it lol

from ( Airbox Mod ) to ( Intake Mod ) lol hahahahaha...

man i cant wait to get home from OBX so i can mess around with my X

I'll have to see what I can do for an exhaust. Maybe I'll be able to get one on there by november. Definately rims for december/january :)

I wonder if there's a way to change this to intake mod thread? Nope guess not. Tried.

Cald..
I suggest, before starting, to get the 4"-3" coupler. I for some reason (at least in ogden) couldn't find this part. I should be getting mine from O'reilly Auto Parts soon. And maybe it would be worth ordering a few different parts (than what I bought from autozone) for the intake.

I think that the solution to your problem is our P/N 9405 (http://www.spectreperformance.com/#CATALOG.9405). Take a look at it on the link. This will allow you to use a cone filter and get rid of the entire stock intake system. In order to help you do this properly, I need some help from you as well. Follow the next set of instructions carefully and I can help you come up with a nice intake set up. Send me some good quality pictures of the entire engine bay and under hood configuration, as well as close up shots of the MAF Sensor and any other sensors that are in your factory air intake route. Please take pictures from different angles with good lighting. The more information you can provide us with, the better. We will NEED to get a measurement of the stock throttle body diameter, intake tube diameter, and tube diameter of where the MAF sensor is placed. You can send the pictures via email to tech@spectreperformance.com or simply by responding to this email.

***Special Note: If at all possible, pictures that have the factory air ducting in place as well as the factory air ducting removed are very helpful to us. Many Spectre products including modular intake components are not legal for on-highway use on pollution controlled motor vehicles in California (and any other states with emissions inspections). Check local laws if you are unsure if your vehicle falls into this category

This is the email i recieve from George @ Spectre, He basically wants to design us something like what MillerTimeX17 is already running...
