I was wondering if anyone had done something similar to the ford40.com air box mod on a second gen X. I know the air box is farther forward and the vacuum ball is below the fender but was curious if something similar could be done.

I cannot believe you guys are sucking air from that area without major moisture on rainy days getting into the intake. Even tons of dirt and dust while your off roading will choke an air filter pretty quickly.

Thats just crazy.

I havent done it, I was just curious if anyone had. I wouldnt think water would be an issue unless you were driving in deep water. I am no expert though which is why I came to ask the Xpert's.

If you have a box like mine, where its right at the front of the engine compartment, i can only imagine this being an even better modification for us. If my box was above my wheel well like that there is no way i could do that, but i think cutting some extra holes in the airbox cant be to bad of an idea.

And, my98nnj, whats the point of a filter if not to get it dirty and change it? lol. I see what you mean about where that one is located though, seems very crappy, you just have to be careful about where you put your plumbing to.

I was thinking of just drilling/sawing out another hole the same size as the one in there, or putting it in the side for more of an induction...

and when the tire hits his air intake...

The reasoning behind piping to the wheel well is to draw in cool air not hot air from the engine compartment. Yeah Clearance may be an issue on 2nd gens since the air box is farther forward but in the first gens the intake tube is over the suspension not the tire.

I dont know how your model year does it but the 96 draws air from the fender, this seems more logical as there's not water, dirt, or clearance concerns, AND you dont have to move your box, just run the intake into the fender

I guess I will have to go out and look at it closer sometime.

This is the best picture I could find, I believe this setup is only like this in the 98/99-01 Explorer 4.0 OHV

I know it doesn't actually show the box, but the box is just to the left of that and doesn't go into the fender or anything, ill be swiss'ing mine on Wednesday most likely. :)

I took a 2000 air box out at a junkyard to get to the auxiliary relay box, it doesnt draw from the fender, but I'm saying it could be modded too since the hole is still in the fender
