AirConditioning Troubleshoot Question

Trying to get the AC to work in my 95 X. Realized today that system fully charged but clutch not engaging when turned on. Besides the simple stuff like checking the fuse, how can i troubleshoot where the problem is before i fork over $200 for a new compressor at Auto Zone. Any suggestions? This was my kids X before me for years and he "can't remember" anything about when or how it stopped working.
