Hi, my Dad recently purchased a used 1999 Explorer. It has a security light on the dash, however, all he recieved when he purchased it was a key. Does the light mean that he has an alarm system and that all he needs is a FOB transmitter to make the alarm work? Thanks!

Hi there... Where exactly is the light? Flashing or solid light? And if there is an existing alarm, it would need to be reprogrammed to match any items associated with it (keys, fob).

Is the light in the instrument cluster, and says "THEFT"? If so, that's for the PATS system. It flashes when the key is off, and when you turn the truck on it light up for a few seconds and goes out.

The 99 Explorers had this light in the instrument cluster. If you have another light somewhere else, it's possible it could go to something aftermarket.

I will check with my Dad and see exactly where the light is. Thanks.
