'95 Explorer XLT 4x4
Let me start out with: I posted this in the newb forum because I am a newb, and because at the moment I don't have the time to wade through 28,000 posts that cover my model to find the several specific answers for myself.. Hopefully someone can give the the correct pointers to help me decide, then I'll go from there.

Now that's out of the way, I'm amazed at the size of this place, and happy as a clam that I found it.

Why I'm here...

I have a '95 XLT, that I was just at the point where I needed to make a decision to either:

a - part it out
b - sell it as is
c - fix it

Last fall, I blew the p/s pressure line on it, so I parked it until I had the time to replace it, then fractured my hip over the winter snowmobiling and just got back on my feet. Well, about 2 weeks ago I moved it so that I could widen my driveway, and blew brake lines on both front and rear when I moved it... In retrospect, I should have seen it coming, but it still caught me by surprise, and I almost ran it down a hill into the neighbors shed some 30 feet away.

I've done brake lines and p/s lines before, no biggie. Actually, I've rebuilt engines, done motor and suspension swaps into vehicles they weren't intended for, for both cars and snowmobiles, etc.. I have skill and basic tools, and limited access to a chassis lift and air-tools.

The V6/4.0 motor has about 108k on it, all done on synthetic oil. Body is in pretty good shape, except passenger side rocker panel. Transfer case is iffy. Both front hubs have already been replaced. The body and interior are in very good condition with the exception of the rocker panel on the passenger side.

Now, I have a 1999 Cherokee with ~160k on it that is my utility vehicle, I run it through hell and high-water, and use it for towing around my snowmobiles and such. But it has uni-body, and the uni-body is rotting. It's dying a slow death from cancer and has only another couple years left. I'm thinking of putting the $$ necessary into the Explorer to get her back into tip-top shape, if it'll take the place of the jeep, and not nickel-and-dime me to death.

The questions are:

- Is the '95 year a sturdy vehicle? (not breaking hitting ruts while towing, etc)

- Is it going to tow a ton of weight, up hills, in the snow? (without overheating the tranny, etc)

- Is there any known issues with the '95 that I need to know about?

- Is the bumper sturdy enough to tow a ton from, or do I need a hitch?

- Any recommendations as to:
-- a - part it out
-- b - sell it as is
-- c - fix it

- Do I want to take the V6 out of it, and drop it into my 1980 TR7?

Thanks for any guidance.

Welcome to this forum! I've moved your thread to the towing section. many people tow with their 1995 vehicles. Make sure that you have a large transmission cooler, and don't tow in overdrive. Check your coolant, oil, and transmission fluid levels before you go on a long trip towing. Always carry extra fluid with you.

Thanks.

I was wondering why I didn't see the thread anymore in the newb forum anymore..

Anybody wanting to pipe in on the non-towing questions, feel free.. Towing is just part of the list of questions.

Sounds to me like minor issues for a 95 Explorer. Do some transfer case searches on here and you'll learn a lot. Figure out what T-case it has and goto the local pull n save and snag one. Same for towing. Don't tow a lot off the bumper. Goto the pull n save and find a drop hitch and slap it on yours. Fix your brake and steering lines. Not sure what your rocker panel damage is but there is always the body shop.. One of mine has some rust. I'm going to grind it out and fill it with something then I'm going to prep my rockers and have them sprayed with rhino liner. Course mine is a off roading fishing rig. If you're tranny and engine are good on your Explorer I can't imagine ditching it for those minor issues unless you have the money to flat out just get a better rig.

how many snowmachines do you pull?

We ride 05 Polaris 900 RMK 159" tracks, two of those suckers on a flat tilt trailer and a 95 Exploder V6 is going to struggle, HOWEVER its tougher then that no frame having Jeep you used to use..... Id take a 95 sploder over a Cherokee any day of the week

Get a hitch, add an aux tranny cooler and a trans temp gage, and have at it!!

I tow a 20 Bayliner with my 96, as well as ATV's and sleds in the winter......but I went with the V8

The weakest part of your 95 explorer is the auto transmission, with only 108K miles you should be golden, keep it cool and now is the time for a new filter and fluid.....
95 is the first year of the Gen II explorer, this is my LEAST favorite year of the explorer but it is still a good truck, 108K miles is about 1/3 of its life IMO

This is exactly why I posted the question where there's people that know.. :D

The passenger side rocker is rotted through completely, there's a hole in the back end of it nearly a foot long. I was worried it was fatal like it is in the jeep, till I read the thread about the body-lifts, and realized the explorer has a full chassis. Then I posted to make sure 25 people didn't answer me that "'95's blow motors and trannies at 120k miles" before I just sink a grand into it.

The sleds are a '05 Edge touring 136", and one I call FrankenStorm.. That's a '96 XLT (originally a 580cc) with a Storm hood and 800cc triple with triple pipes stuffed into it. (that was nearly a 200 hour project by the time I added in the extra cooler and worked out the air-pocket from hell) Total weight between them is a little over 1/2 ton, add trailer, tools, parts, and fuel, and I figure a ton is a safe guesstimate.

Thanks for the tips, so far they are positive. I ain't a rich guy, so I don't have the cash to drop on a losing battle, and from your responses so far it doesn't seem to be one.

Are you guys of the opinion that I should do the fuel lines at this time as well? Any other ideas for P/M stuff to do at the same time? I'll make a list and start collecting parts.

Also, for the most part, I'll be keeping this stock, at least for the time being, I might play later though.

Anyone else wanting to chime in, feel free..

Oh yeah..... I Almost forgot!!!

Ever since I got this (I think I put about 12k on it as my backup vehicle over the last 4 years) it has had a shudder going in and out of overdrive.. I googled it and came up with no answers.

It's real minor, and doesn't seem to get worse after it warms up or anything and hasn't gotten worse in ~12k miles, but I thought I'd ask now there's people that might know.

What in the world is it?

Brooklynbay is a really good person to ask that question to.. Try doing a topic search on transmission shudder.
