Alternator Problem?

So yesterday on my way home my battery light came on. Before I go on any further I just purchased a brand new battery 2 months ago, there is no corrosion or problem with the battery itself. My problem is that when I go over 2000RPMS the light goes off and when im stopped or idleing or under 2000RPMS the light comes on. My car's accessories like my deck slowly started to die seeing as there wasnt enough power. So I pulled over and turned my car off, it wouldnt start again and I needed a jump to get it going again. The battery is not holding a charge what so ever.

Im wondering if this could be a problem with my alternator, though I have no prior engine knowledge though have someone in the family who could help me install one if need be. I just want to know for sure before I go out and waste my money.

sounds like an alternator problem. i would take it to auto zone and have them test both the battery and the alternator(its free). Alternator ran me about 100 bucks. Changing it is not too bad. I did it in the AZ parkinglot with simple tools. disconnect battery. remove serpentine belt. remove two alternator bolts on top and unplug it.hope this helps some
 






It sounds like you have a charging system problem. I would check the following before going forward. First, check and 1) make sure that the battery posts are clean, use a simple wire brush to clean them as well as the cable terminals. 2) have the car started (with the jumper - if battery is dead) Once the engine running, use a voltmeter and check for voltage across the battery terminals. voltage reading should be around 13.5v to 14.5 volts to indicate alternator is putting out the proper voltage to charge the battery. You really need to make sure the battery posts and cable connectors are clean. Also, check to make sure the negative wire is properly connected to a very clean and good ground. A bad ground connection will also cause the alternator voltage not to reach the battery.

NOTE: once the car started, the car gets it power from the alternator, if it dies as soon you disconnect the battey while running is an indication that the alternator is not putting out the proper voltage to operate the engine.
HOw old is the car?
If lower voltage is found say 12.5 volts and below, alternator is likely defective. you need to change it. or it have a bad voltage regulator.
