I've had my truck for 3 years and 1 month now. In that 3 year time frame, I've had more exhaust setups than most people have on every car they ever own (or so I feel). In order...

Stock - lasted about 2 months
Down pipe and nothing else - Stock muffler broke off at the inlet - lasted about 6 months
Flowmaster 2 chamber delta flow with tail pipe - Lasted about 6 months I think
Flowmaster 2 chamber delta flow without tail pipe - Lasted about 4 months I think
Flowmaster 2 chamber delta flow with ANOTHER tail pipe, this time bigger - Lasted about 2 months.
Took Flowmaster out, and put pipe in it's place - 2 1/4 down pipe with a 2 1/2 tail pipe - Lasted about 5 months I guess (These Time frames are ALL estimates)
Took it all off and put in a stock replacement - Lasted 3 months
(Are your eyes crossed and brain numb yet?)
Straight pipe from cats, turn to underneath rear pass. door, then stopped at tire - 2 inch pipe used - Lasted 1 month
Same exact setup only 2 1/4 pipe - Lasted 4 months or so
Now I have a Flowmaster 3 chamber dual out coming out from under the bumper - Lasts as long as I can refrain from ripping it all out and STARTING AGAIN!! - So far, it's been 4 months

Is there something wrong with me? I'm fixin' to rip it all out and run 2 1/2 pipe from the cat to just behind the pass. side tire just like stock. No muffler, AGAIN!!! I've had something similar, but not quite. I used smaller pipe last time. What can I do to stop the madness? Some one help...

All I can say is that the phrase, "More money than sense", comes to mind. What are you going for, sound, performance, looks?

I second that!

Stop what you are doing. Sit back and look at the system
Do it right all at once then leave it and move on :)

hahaha
I have the 4th exhaust system on my BII in 7 years.
the first was for the 2.9L, then when I converted to 4.0L I got some headers, so I changed it again, etc etc...

Finally I took it to the right shop, used the right equipment and hangers and had it installed just where I wanted it as high up as possible and it will likely never need attention again aside from another muffler or cat :)

To tell the truth, I'm after all of that. Sound, Performance, but looks I don't really care about. That's the thing though... I've been happy with the sound and performance with ALL of my systems... But not for more than 6 months. Every system I've had was great! I think I'm just a compulsive spender. I swear... You could drive my truck right now, then come back 6 months from now and It will be completely different. I change it ALL the time. Always fiddlin'. My mind never stops. I'm ALWAYS thinking of different ways to work on it. (I take medication for this) (Well, surposed to anyway)

If I'm gonna be satisfied at all, the system is gonna have to be loud and smooth. Just like all my other systems... I've got it down to a 2 chamber non delta, or a dynomax ultra flow/hooker max flow if I use a muffler at all. I think I might give the straight through muffler a chance.

Maybe if the shop I used charged more, I would quit, huh?

What about the intake and internal engine mods to get the exhaust to sound even better?

I say just move on to other mods also. There is so much that can be done to an explorer. You could become an intake addict or a lift addict of you wanted. :D

I have 2 words for you buddy...

Super 40

;)

I guess I should have told ya'll more about my truck... From front to back

Electric Fan
Be Cool Radiator
KKM
75mm MAF
66mm TB
Ported & Polished intake
Port Matched throughout
98 heads with cleaned up ports
410 cam
BBK Headers
And every exhaust setup known to man, I think

And that's just the motor :burnout:

Well then, now that I see the mods, I will say that you should decide on an exhaust and move on to another area and mod it just as much as your engine. :)

Thanks.... I've done it now. I just wanted to clear up I really am OCD... Obsessive Compulsive that is. It's hard to just leave something alone. If you saw my truck, you'd see why. It's COMPLETELY stripped of everything I don't need to make it run... No A/C, no heat, no interior other than front seats, dash, and carpet in front, no radio, no frills at all. All go and no show...

Do you have any pics? :)

I'm sure I got some old ones somewhere. I gotta get some new ones. I wanna show off like everyone else. :D

I don't think you'll ever be happy with an exhaust, with what you're looking for. From what I can tell, you put a new, loud exhaust in....then tear it out when you're accustomed to the sound and don't notice it as much anymore, and put something louder in.

You're doomed. :D
