Neutral Tow Kit

I've been informed that Ford has discontinued the neutral tow kit so anybody with a Ford 4X4 cannot tow their vehicle flat (on all 4 wheels).
My question is:

Is the neutral tow kit just an idiot light that confirms that you've followed the right sequence of steps to get the transfer case into neutral? Or does it contain a switch of sorts that actually does something?

I figure that a system can be jimmy rigged to light up with information coming from the transfer case and 4X4 controller and the neutral tow kit is not required at all. I understand that a program has to be downloaded into the truck computer in order to get the sequence to work.

Any information would be appreciated.

Depends on the year, make, and model. They most certainly do offer neutral tow kits on many of the newer 4x4s. However, finding a kit for a 95 Explorer could be difficult... It all depends on what you're looking for.

As for 'rigging' the transfer case electronics? Not gonna be easy without a LOT of electronics knowledge (WAY over my head)...

I have a 2003 4.6L V8 4WD.
The neutral tow kit has been discontinued. Can't understand why you can't get parts for a vehicle that's only 7 years old.

That is surprising... The part number is a 1L2Z-7H332-AA, which is superseded to a -AB, which as you discovered is no longer available. No idea why as Ford usually maintains stuff like that available for 10 years or longer.

Unfortunately there is no cheap or simple solution for you. You *may* get lucky and find one on ebay or someplace else at some point in time, but the chances of that are rare.

Unfortunately because the parts aren't available, I have no idea what would come in the kit. The bulk of the 'controls' for it are in the 4wd control module programming, and I *think* there was a switch and an LED, but I can't be sure. If that's all it is, the programming could still be done, and a resourceful tech could install a different switch and LED to the proper connectors and it *should* work, but finding that tech with that knowledge could be difficult...

The neutral tow kit for 2001 - 2005 is just an indicator light (LED). The kit from Ford plugs into a small green connector under the steering wheel. I installed my own by cutting off the connector and hooking the 2 wires up to an LED I purchased from an automotive store ($10). The dealer downloaded the program for the sequence of steps and then confirmed everything was working when the light was on. I was fortunate that the dealer did this for no charge because they had never seen this but were willing to learn. It took them about 15 minutes. Ford head office was no help at all as they said I was out of luck because the 'kit' has been discontinued. The 'kit' consists of a light, some stickers and a couple of templates. The key is the program and the sequence of steps not the Neutral Tow Kit.

RV & Towed Brake Problem

Hi,
On my 1998 Explorer, with neutral tow kit working just fine for nine plus years, I have an M&G braking system installed. It fits my Explorer just fine. Took about two hours to install. Is not connected to the brake pedal. Is not in the interior of the Explorer. It fits just behind the master cylinder. Check them out. Hope this helps on this old thread!

Hi all,

Is there a way to make cruise control to automatically switch on in m 96 XLT explorer when I start the engine?

It is just that the on switch is so fragile and I have gone through 3 Switches because of it.
