I have a 1998 XLT, V8, that I use to pull my 20' boat. Somewhere I saw, a year ago or so, a modification to either the airbox, or the throttle body, that involved taking out a small piece that obstructs the airflow. Darned if I can find that info. Any help greatly appreciated!

intake...

open up your intake (as if you're changing your air filter) and look at the hole the air gets sucked in through.. it what... 2" in diameter? I cut that entire front section of the box out (UNDER WHERE THE FILTER IS) so my air comes through a huge square...

You're not gonna notice a HUGE gain in towing your boat. But if you do that.. get some exhaust.. maybe an apten chip.. then you'll start noticing some nice power gains. Just dont expect 10hP from cutting open your airbox and dropping in a K&N

On the 1st Gen. X's, I know, that where the air came in was from behind the grill. And the tube has a square box covering it that has large oval slots on the sides of the box. The box was held in with some of those plastic push pins, that I cut off and pulled the whole thing off. But like Sk1er said, there is only a small hole in the newer boxes that has like a trumpet end on it where the air comes through. Even if you were to pull that out, the opening is still about the same size. But if you were to cut open that side of the box it open it up to a lot more air. Or there is always a KKM if you'd want to replace the whole thing. I've also heard that in some cars, after the MAF, somewhere in the tube that goes to the intake manifold has a restrictive plastic piece in there. But I can't be certain about that.

I would recommend picking up the MAC cold air kit....I have it on my X and my Mustang...a great product and adds a really cool "Growl" sound to your engine at full throttle!

also helped me a bit in the mpg department

Hey Guys, really appreciate the information! I'm going to try all your ideas ASAP.
