Well fellas...its been a day. Long story short on my way to the auto part store to get a thermastat to solve or try to solve my temp gauge issue, I noticed a grinding coming from my passenger side. Upon inspection through the caliper inspection port I notice my inner pad on my passenger side is wedge shaped. And there is a gouge the size of the Grand Canyon in my rotor. Looks like its wrenching and not camping for me this labor day weekend. I've got a Haynes manual and the great thread on here. But what I'm wondering is why the uneven wear in the pad? It did pull slightly to the right for the last month. Nothing noticeable but other than that no rubbing or grinding sounds. Also any advice on the brake job is appreciated. Itll be my first go round with actual wheel bearings. I have done my research and it seems like Bendix or Performance Friction semi metallic would be the way to go but none of the auto part stores here in Portland carry either. So, any suggestions there would be helpful as well.

Some photos would help. You may have had some kind of caliper piston failure, or something somehow got caut behind the pad.

If the slide pins are dry, the caliper will stick, causing uneven pad wear

I'll definitely get some pictures. I called the ford dealership and they told me they would use NAPAs brake and rotors if I were to bring it to them. So, that's what I'm going to go with. I have come upon some questions though. I cant seem to find a rotor with the abs tone ring. And I cant find anything in the manual about removing it or reinstalling one. So, what is it and how do I remove it and reinstall? Also I plan on changing the wheel bearings and the ones at napa come with a seperate piece for the bearing to go into yet I have not come across anything about it In the procedure.

Another Question..

I have been reading various threads on this site and I have been reading that 94's did not have a tone ring in the front end only sensors for the ABS.

Is this all 94 X's?

Because so far, all I could find is one rotor that even offers an ABS tone ring option.

Also instead of the fancy auto hun socket, I have a 2 3/8" 3/4 drive socket....will that work or do I have to get that socket?

rockauto rotors
Every one I clicked on noted an included ABS/tone ring. It is pressed on to the rotor at factory, you don't buy them separately to install.

Does your ABS currently work anyway?

Also, regarding your bearing, would be best to show or tell what you actually have.

Thanks,
I called around and found some at Advance Auto parts. I dont have time to wait for Rockautos shipping nor the extra cash to throw at expedited shipping. This is my daily driver and I'm the bread winner with 2 kids. I have to fix it this weekend. And I will take pictures of the bearings tomorrow once I get one out. I have never messed with the hubs or wheel assembly. I also live where I dont know anyone or have any family near by. So it's up to me and y'alls infinite knowledge. I've got rotors pads slide pins and grease ordered. And I can rent the socket from Advanced as well.

And yes my ABS works.

If you are borrowing tools, I don't think advance auto carries the inch lb torqe wrench as a loaner, which you should use to properly torque the wheel after bearing replacement. Autozone does offer the 3/8 inch lb torque wrench as a loaner.

You want him to get an inch pounds torque wrench to Re torque the spindle nuts?

Is your explorer 4wd?
Do you still have auto hubs?

I always did the spindle nuts by feel when repacking the bearings on my 87 Ranger.

Yes and every trailer and set of old wheel bearings that ride on a spindle. Imo the torque wrench is not needed
How the spindle nuts come off depends greatly on if you still have automatic hubs or not

Pretty much all 94s had the abs tone rings

Yes I have auto hubs, yes its 4 wheel drive

As to the part about the torque wrench...I have watched a couple of videos and one guy did it by feel and another guy torqued it to two ft lbs.

Do you guys have any recommendations on grease? Ford says to use NGLI NO.2 Lithium based grease. But I want to put the best stuff I can afford on it.

If I had the time I would order heavy duty pads and rotors but I'm in a bind.

Lucas red and tacky wheel bearing grease is good
Or any moly grease or marine grease there are several options

I use brake clean and a magnet to free the little lock pin from the spindle groove on the auto hubs. If it is fighting you then you need to move the spindle nut slightly to take any pressure off the little “key way”
With the spindle nut right in the “middle” the key will come out

Thanks for the advice. They do have the Lucas red and tacky. So that's what I'll grab.

4250 is correct for 4wd 91-94 explorer yes
