Thanks to the awesomeness that was the VIN checker, I have narrowed it down to two 2006 EB 4x2 Explorers, we'll call them The Cherry and The Blueberry. Both of these trucks have a date of 12/12/05 on the window stickers.

I'm leaning toward the Blueberry because it's local, an off lease, and it has 22K miles on it. (Although the fact it's not certified pre owned is rather odd..) There is a 2007 EB as a possible alternate as well, but the 06's have nearly all the options I want.

Question: Did the 2006's come with the built in mp3 player jack, or is the changer just compatible with mp3 cd's?

I read a lot of tales of problematic 2006's. Is there anyone out there who's happy with theirs? Is there anyone who DIDN'T have a problem with their radiator?

I have 2006 EB, 4wd, v8. It's my daily commuter, I clock about 2000 miles a month, just past 80,000 miles. The radiator problem is I believe with v6, mine is fine, I have that sporadic kick in the tranny when stopping, but nothing serious. So far the only thing I had to replace was rear whel hub assembly at 78,000 miles, cost $ 400.
But I tow with it and plow in the winter occasionaly, so I was not surprised it broke.

it was the 06 v6 he is correct. with a date code like the one shown that would have had the old radiator in it. It have problems if v6

If either of these are at a Ford dealer, ask the salesman for an Oasis report. This will show what warranty repairs have been done in the last 12 months.

Shift interlock has been a problem as well as leaking moonroof. There are TSB's for these items.

If either is a V-8, check the trans for smooth operation on the 2-1 shift coming to a stop. Also TSB for this.

Think that the aux jack did not appear until 07 models.

Both are V6's, and the blue one is at a Ford dealer. Thanks Bill, I will be sure to ask for the report.
