ok my 4.0 has ticked me off for the last time the valves are now burnt so i need to pull the head again, The question is how hard or much harder whould it be to put a 5.0 in than a different 4.0 can i bolt to the a4ld which mine is not original i prettey sure it has been rebuilt becase it has a new pan and shifts like a dream or do i have to pull the trans and put in a diff one? also if i do pull the trans do i need a new transfer case, Then also do i need to get a new computer for the car as well if so is it plug and play? as you can see i have many questions is there a thred on just how to swap a 302 or even a 351 into a explorer

Did you include this thread? Cause this would make it 1,233,387 if you didn't. :p

If you are doing it your self, Maybe. Otherwise no. Yes short answer, you would need a new trans, it would never stand up to a 5.0, and probably would not bolt up either. T-Case would not be a problem, they bolt up the same as long as you get the 4X4 Trans. If you stay away from OBD2 it will be easier, especially if you go to a carbureted version. Take a look at 410Fortune thread on retrofitting a B2.

yikes careful there n0xdw

The cheapest and easiest/best way IMO to get a 5.0L into an explorer, even first gen, is to buy a complete explorer with a 5.0L in it (96-01), or at least all the parts you need from one to do the conversion in one purchase.
The v6 transmissions will not bolt up to the 5.0L
the V6 transfer case will not bolt up tot he V8 transmission (not without an adapter, which requires rebuidling of the V8 transmission)

$2000 is NOT enough to do this conversion, its about half IMO of whats needed at the very minumum with you doing 100% of your own work.

Putting this drivetrain inot my BII is 90% the same as putting it into a 91-94 explorer. The only difference is the 91-94 explorer has more room for a radiator in front of the engine, and that is it, otherwise it is the same.
You will have to do all the same things I did as far as fitting the engine in the truck at the very min.

However if you would have taken sections advice and searched you would know this already! research is key!!!

yea i many be sticking with the 4.0 ok options on make a v6 sound like a v8, i heared a 4.3 with a cam and it sounded mean any ideas on where i could get a cam while i have the motor out

yes the search button

There are cams available for your engine
There are members on this forum who have installed them into their 4.0L's

Doing a search will point you to your answers.
Alot of other people have also asked about exahsut setups for the 4.0L.

Hope that helps!
