On the way to work this morning the old navajo decided it didn't want to up shift. At least to 2nd and then maybe 3rd. Knowing I was due for a fluid and filter change. I decided I would limp her home and take care of it. After a fluid change its still doing the same thing. Heres the stats on this old girl shes sitting at just under 187,000 miles the trans fluid was just changed today no major work has ever been done on it except for regular fluid and filter changes which works out to about every 12 months or so. I did replace the modulator summer before last. I am not sure where to start with this thing. Auto trans have never been my strong point. I was maybe thinking the modulator might be bad, but theres no fluid in the hose Is there anything else I should check.:navajo:

The governor may be sticking. Read up on here about the governor and the no shift/late shift issues related to that. It can be cleaned or replaced without removing the trans (you DO have to drop the TC though).

thanks glacier I will try and give her a looksee tomorrow Im just way too tired and its getting late here

Thanks Brooklyn you always seem to have the right thread at the right time

ditto on the govenor

I might add that if you had a fine 1-2 shift and a problem with the 2-3, then I would not think "governor problem". It is implicated in both shifts, so if you only have a problem in one, you can rule out the governor. Since you have it in both.. suspect it. It ususally shows up in the 1-2 primarily.

It was pretty much in the 1-2 shift. like I said it just started the other morning and actually unlike some it happens even after its warmed up. I did pull the governor today and cleaned it not much there actually no groves no wear marks to speak of and the spring did seem a bit weak. probably a testament to running synthetic trans fluid all these years. one question though how much fluid should drain out of the bottom of the housing after dropping the TC Iveprobably lost about a quart so far. Ill be putting it back in as soon as I warm up a bit 45 degrees here with a pretty strong wind and nothing more than an open carport to work under. If this doesnt fix it what else should I be looking for. Im thinking valve body or servos I have read alot in the last few days hoping a big light bulb will go on in this head of mine.

Well it wasn't the governor. I just got back from a 30 mile test drive I do have 2nd but I have to feather the gas at just the right time to get it in there. It will shift from 2nd to 3rd then OD on its own So here I am stuck wondering what the next step wil be Im leaning more toward the VB but open to suggestions here

I'd guess that either your VB is leaky (try retorquing it to spec) your intermediate band is broken, or the intermediate servo is fried (as BB suggested).

Glacier you were right on the money with it being the intermediate band being broken I ordered both servos and a transgo shift kit as well as the gaskets. Figguring if it was the VB being loose I kinda could kill 2 birds with one stone. I figgured I could probably get to the servos if I removed the cats so while waiting for the PB Blaster to do its thing. I dropped the pan while I was lowering it to my drain pan I heard a not so familiar sound of something rolling or sliding around in the pan. I finished emptying the pan and viola theres the intermediate band anchor which had broken off of one end or another. So I guess my worst fears have finally been realized and thanks to your rebuild diary I think I can handle the job.
