I read this thread a while back:
http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=251448

and finally found some LED modules that seemed ok - not cheap though like in the thread above. Probably around $10usd/pc in hand on e-bay. I liked these since the control circuitry is onboard, no external parts required - just hook up to 12 Volts. Each module draws around 1/4Amp.

Pictures of bulb housings - removed from overhead console, these housings snap into the overhead console.

Housing back side with reflector in place

housing back side - reflector removed

housing front side - reflector removed, notice plastic melted from heat generated by original bulb, probably due to a bad connection

Next step was to remove some plastic so the LED module would fit in place with out interference. I used the soldering iron to remove plastic - this is not recommended since it will ruin the tip on the iron. Some of the ribs are left on so the LED doesn't fall through.

Next some notches were cut into the housing for the power leads to the LED.
In the case of these LED modules, it doesn't matter how they are wired, +,- can be reversed
and they will still work.

The LED was potted into place with silicone from behind (this is top view of installed LED)

Back side potted, this will help in the long run since vibrations could eventually break the component leads.

Bulb assemblies snapped back into the console, and final wiring done. Silicone used again at connections for strain relief.
- the flex circuit board was cut and wires soldered to it, for the modules.

Back side of the overhead console, more silicone.

Will update with night shot, it looks like there's a flourescent tube in the front of the truck now.

update: night time photos, street lights on, exposure set so pictures are very close to actual lighting conditions

Great write up, and good lighting. Job well done.

Got the link or a part # for those? I looked up 1109WH on eBay and didn't find anything

2 years old. I like the results...adding to the long list of money thieving mods.

to get similar style led modules:
search for G4, 12v, led on e-bay, and there should be results.

to get the blueish white light choose 5000 - 6000K(cool white) color temp (not warm white which is 4000K range)

Some modules will have diode bridges in them, so it won't matter if +, - are wired backwards

I chose the led wholesaler "seller/brand" and they are pretty solid.
A lot of chinese designed modules (especially the "5050" leds) are never biased right and will burn out quickly, instead of the around 5000+? hours they are supposed to last.

the following modules listed aren't from the seller I bought from 2yrs ago, so I can't vouch for quality

it has a diode bridge, switcher on it

or something like this, but don't know how it's driven

Outstanding pics, great ingenuity on your part. my dome lights have been out for quite some time seem i've attempted to replace the bulbs and torn the flex circuit. Great job on he instruction.

Nice... I plan on doing this mod soon... I WISH I could find a circular disc style map light like yours with the 10 LEDs but in RED and it seems they only offer red in square sheets :-/

How was the wiring done?

If its like the one I have it just plugs straight in.

The thing is on the map lights they worked with the copper conductor branch to the bulb holders. If you remove that for this mod you have to wire them somewhere else.

the color wire black Red Green which goes to what side cause im tryin to put blue led?

the lights can still be switched on with the buttons that way right?
