Inquiry/Concern
--------------------------------
I own an explorer eddie bauer 2000 model from a ford
dealer in Ottawa. I do not have an extended warranty on the vehicle, but the
engine is making a rattling noise at mid rpm acceleration range. I have
done extensive research on recalls and technical service bulletins and
believe this to be a chain tensioner issue which apparently is quite
common in the 4.0L SOHC V6 engine.

My question is this, if I take it in to be fixed is this at no charge
assuming it is the same problem everyone else has with this engine
noise? Mileage is only 77500 Km.
Seems like such a common problem it must be covered.
Check out serious explorations website and see how many people have this problem.

Any information on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your message of 05/20/03 regarding your Ford Explorer. We
appreciate the time you have taken to write us seeking information.

As you requested, we have examined your vehicle profile for any open
Field Service Actions (FSA) or Customer Satisfaction Programs (CSPs)
that apply to your vehicle.

At this time, our records indicate that there are no open FSAs or CSPs
on your vehicle. In the event that we announce a program, Ford of
Canada will notify the owner of record by mail.

Mr. --------, the media and internet sites will often indicate that an
entire model year is included in a FSA or CSP (CSPs are the programs
that extend warranty on a particular part of the vehicle).

In reality, it is usually only a small percentage of vehicles that are
included in this type of program, as usually any Ford- recognized
concern is as a result of a problem during a particular manufacturing
period or only from a particular plant.

At Ford of Canada, we consider the satisfaction of our customers as one
of our most important objectives. If you have any other inquiries or
concerns, please feel free to contact us and we will be happy to address
them.

Thank you for contacting Ford of Canada.

Sincerely,
Suren

Seems to be a common thing here,

However, in a related note, we were looking at the Ford Dealer last night (wife is looking @ an Escape or an Explorer), and the salesman asked me how I liked my Exp...Got an earful about the SOHC problem (and trans issues). Said he heard they were noisy, but usually it's nothing to worry about. However, that's the salesdroid's view. When he asked what my next vehicle would be, I was just silent and said "dono" (been seriously eyeing the G35 sedan, 6 speed) and went on about how expensive the Mustangs are getting (about the only Ford car that interests me again)...
