Im gonna jinx myself for posting this but wondering if anyone's 06 has not experienced the leaking radiator yet and what milage you're at?

And...if anyone had successfully fixed theirs with only one radiator replacement.

Just bracing myself for the possible ineviatablility of ditching this truck.

Is the leaking radiator unique to the 2006 model year or are other model years involved?

early model 06 4.0 v6 models.

Thanks for the concise answer, because the other link above was 14 pages of complaints which I wasn't about to sift through.

why is it not a recall?? should I ask..

I bought a 06 Dec1st 50,000 miles.. I did not even pop the hood. I found one in Memphis
one in Jackson.. in my price range.. I buy the Jackson one.. I take on a trip to Memphis
on the way back check engine light comes on.. I put it on a computer the guy did pop the hood to look at fluid level on radiator. He tells me this is a NEW radiator.. It is not leaking but light show themastat needs changeing,, Not running hot.
Then I get on here and read all of this...

I had my 08's radiator replaced at maybe 40000 under warr. because of a leak. True should be a recall. They know they have a problem. The Ford Tech. knew what it was soon as it rolled in. He said the radiators were clamped in too tight from the factory and they crack due to this and that is the problem. They are bolted in when fixed he said this shouldn't let them crack.

STU

^..geez 2008's doing it too huh? I think its a pressure problem inside the radiator not being clamped too tight but I can't get a straight answer on that too.

my '06 has about 58k on it and no radiator problem that I know of. However it could have gone out with previous owner :dunno:

I did however lose the thermostat housing right after I bought it.:(

Yeah my 06 i had to do 2 of those (in 37xxx miles)!

I believe there was a TSB issued for it. they issue after 90% are out of warranty so they dont have to "warranty" it. i believe it was issued in late 09 or 10 sometime.

50K miles on my 06, never been in the shop except to install NTK

That's why I got rid of it last March 2010 -- four radiators, two thermoplastic cracks and water pump. The last straw was when the water pump was leaking from the bearing. What happened was the Ford dealer used a impact wrench to tighten down the threads on the fan - the threads where worn out from removing/installing the fan. I still have the fan/clutch in my garage. The bearing was wobbling, but evertime I went to have the radiator replaced, they tried to say that the antifreeze was not changed yearly. The inside of the water pump was shiny and new. This is why the radiator went ??? I look at all the money Ford made off this problem, then issue a TSB after the three year warranty was up. The radiator was only a partial list of problems with the SUV.

The bad news......I had a '96, an '03, and now an '06. All 3 Explorer radiators leaked! The good news.......luckily, I haven't had to replace one "yet." The leaks have been manageable.

Wow, I can understand why patience ran out. What model year was that ex-Explorer?

Plenty of talk about bad radiators but nobody is mentioning what engine they have. Mine is just fine with the 4.6 and 65,000 miles.

considering that 06 didn't matter if it was a 4.6 or 4.0 they all leak.
