this is what i have. 99 ranger ohv, with a bad main bearing. what i want to know is what years i can change the motor with. if i have to re use the upper intake, manifolds, or sensors, i am fine with swapping those over. i need to know if the long blocks are the same from say 92-01 or is there a year range i need to stick to (95-01)

I know you have to have a 95+ block. pre '95 didnt have all the motor mount bosses, so the newer mounts wont bolt on to the block. (dont ask me how I found that out. ;))

that makes sense. the suspensions were different in the 98 and down rangers, and 95 and up ex's. never thought of that one!

ive read that they changed internal things every single year from 95-01. but everything should hook up and work the same.

heads have a smaller combustion chamber on the '95. Did you spin a bearing? A reman crank and matching bearings shouldn't be that much!?

under load it has a knock. a used motor or donor truck will run me around 400-500. if i get a donor truck, i will get most, if not all the money back. it will go for sale soon, so doing a motor swap is cheaper, and faster.

Yeah, true. Probably a rod bearing. Sucks.

just for future references, if anyone else uses the "search" function, you will want to keep this in consideration. i used a 96 explorer motor, and dropped it into a 99 ranger. both are ohv motors. the 96 is a external egr motor, the ranger was a internal. you will have to change the (at minimum) drivers side exhaust manifold, or block off the egr system. you will need to change basically all sensors (concertos are different) and do not forget to look at the cam synchronize at the top of the motor near the back. you will also have to change the fuel rail, and possibly the injectors. if your dropping it into a explorer to a ranger, or vise versa, you may also need to change the drivers side motor mount plate (the bolt pattern is different).

Not in the Ranger you don't... :D

95's are obdI, what all would have to be swapped if i went with a newer exploder ohv?

you would have to change all the stuff that i have noted, depending on what year motor you have. if you are getting a 98 and older, you can leave the fuel system (rails) alone, depending on the color of injectors (i changed them over because the 96 motor was red in color, and the 99 truck where yellowish orange, they may be the same lbs/hr but why rip into it twice if you dont have to). but most likely, all the sensors will have to be swapped because the connector ends may be different (that was my main reason).

Thanks for the info. Its hard to find a motor out of a 95 with less than 200k on it. Id like to do a 5.0 swap but unfortunately with this being my only vehicle, i need to do something that can be completed overnight.

5L swap, if you have all the parts ready, wouldnt take a few days longer, as long as you get a 96 parts truck i would think. did it in my sport in 2 weeks, and that was with doing a 4406, and having a bad back at the same time.
