Any Experience with 5R55S Boxes?

Picked up a dandy '04 Explorer a year ago, 4.0L SOHC, had 91K on it.......now am 2000 miles from home (my workshop), it has 110K, and I'm feeling an almost imperceptible little "wiggle", when I come to a stop at a traffic light, just after movement of the vehicle ceases altogether, almost like some part in the driveline "lets loose", just for an instant, no visible change on the tach, just kind of feel it in the brake pedal......hard to describe, vague I know.....

Thinking maybe one of the 2 sprag clutches which are "holding" in 1st. gear "D" position may slip just a tad; happens only now & then, maybe every tenth stop. Upon accelerating, everything feels smooth, no slip then, shifts just fine.

My only other inkling on this is possibly some kind of "lash" happening between brake pads and rotor.......but, no sound is produced, and why not all the time?

My worry, of course, is that the damn thing might "buy it" out here where I can't do much to bail myself out----except spend a ton of money for possible shoddy work.....

Any ideas on this? Appreciate any input! Thanks........imp

never felt anything similar in the Ex, sorry but maybe this will help.

Although one of my heeps had a similar feeling. I concluded it was due to Axle wrap, it was a solid axle, free hanging driveshaft. What was happing was during braking the Axle would try and rotate and then pull/push axle on the Xfr side. Once you came off the brakes it would return to its original position, it felt like something un-wound. Supposedly if you grease the splines it would fix it??

Just a guess, not sure if it would even apply to the Ex, everything is hard mounted? Maybe check all the joints, half-shafts, drive shafts etc. . .

Thanks, jr! I once had something like you describe with a solid-axle, leaf springs, rubber bushings shot were allowing movement, carrier wrap-up when torque applied.....

But, I do not think I've got that sort of thing now, but mentioned it for others who read this, and just might. imp
