I was wondering if anybody has taken there rear window on and off several times. I have a source that will make zippered bags like ttop bags for the rear window for around $45. Would this be practible or would the holes in the door wear out from removing the bolts over and over again. I like to take my dog places and I wont ride over 40 mph with the window up so I want to take it off.

Why not just drive around with the glass up?

I dont understand what you are asking, you want to make a zip in rear window for your Explorer? Why so you can unzip it when it's not raining and zip it up when it does?

Clarify please. And what are T top bags?

OH BAM it just hit me, you mean the bags the t tops go in after you remove them! hahahaha! so you've got a guy who will make a bag to hold your rear glass after you take it off......is that it?

Hmmm......You could replace teh factory glass hold in bolts with some quick release type fasteners. I would be more worried about breaking the glass around the bolt holes...maybe have a rear window made from Lexan?

I have been thinking fora few years about making the big side windows of my BII removeable, instead of chopping the top. It can be done, but man it's gonna take a lot of custom fabrication to get it to seal up for wind and rain, and plus it would be best ot have Lexan windows instead of glass.....hmmmm...

Yeah you got it! What kind quick release things are you talking about. And why would you be worried about breaking the glass around the bolt holes. Its attached all the way through the glass. Need input people getting ready for a weekend of fishing and boating with me and mans best friend.

I would not recomend doing this. Driving with the rear window open or removed will allow exhaust gasses to enter the rear of the vehicle and can cause seriously harmful effects to yourself and your pets.

Good point MRBOYLE but thats only if you stop for an extended period of time. I mean look at full size Bronco's, Jeeps, and anything with a chopped top?

I plan to either convert my tailgate to the open glass style and make the side windows re-moveable, or to completely chop the top.

Has anybody had problems with exhaust gasses in the cab with the rear glass open?

I would think if you set your fan on high and put it on dash, keep the front windows down, the air would flow enough to keep the gasses out. Any idea's?

That is the one thing that I wish the Explore has, was a remotely operated tailgate window that would go down inside the tailgate. Even the newest 4-Runners have them. Although my girlfriends Cherokee doesn't even have glass that opens, just the whole tailgate.

Someone shoule just make a aftermarket tailgate with a window that will roll down. It is just so cool to have that option, especially with pets and such.

Fischer, thats right! it would be perfect, I just dont think there is enough room in our tailgates. What about making a quick release system for the glass and even making a lexan glass panel?

That would be ideal! Not as easy as pushing a button, but still good enough for me.....

the exhaust gas problem he is talking about happens when you are moving, the rear area of our boxes on wheels becomes a low pressure area and draws all the exhaust gasses to that opening, If you have ever blown a tranny seal, or wet roads with dirty water you can see how this works on the back of the truck...

...if that doesnt make any sense, think of cowl induction, but the truck is the cowl, and the open back window is the induction

right it makes sense, I mean I can tell by how much damn water gets on the rear hatch when the roads are wet. My question is how come people with Fourrunners, full size Bronco's, and the like arent dropping dead from exhaust gasses when they drive around all day with the window down? Side exit exhaust?

The Explorer exhaust exits in the exact same place......

When I carry long loads and have the rear hatch glass open, I can smell the exhaust a bit. It's the worst when under 5 mph, or about 35-50 mph.

BTW, I also smelled exhaust in my friend's 4Runner, so it isn't just an Explorer thing.

does it help if you turn your fan on high?

Man i have been wanting to do the same thing, i love having the rear window up when i drive cus i can actually see out of my truck, (tinting is dark)

The gasses are actually not that bad if you roll your windows down. I guess I will be the hamster for this experiment. I will keep it posted.

anyone have any more on this? I would like this as well.

Here in town they are a bunch of suv's/vans that drive around with there glass up. I though of this too, it's doesnt seem to hard to remove the glass and the cylinder clip, Just havn't though of any quick disconnects for it yet.

Are there carbon monoxide detectors? If there are, you should put one of those things in there to monitor or go off when the levels are too high.
