Hi all:

I'd like to tint the taillight lenses on my black '01. The smoke spray sold at streetbeat customs is $25 a can, which seems a bit much.

Anybody tried this?

http://www.hobbylinc.com/htm/tam/tam86031.htm

It's a laquer for polycarbonate, so it should adhere permanently on the taillight lenses. It's supposed to be impervious to fuels and oils, so I think it would hold up fine. And, it's $5 a can.

If anybody's tried this stuff, and it hasn't held up, let me know. Otherwise, I think I'll try it.

Regards,
John.

i would definitely try it

i've painted 3 sets of tails with the red model paint over various parts of the tail with no ill effects or problems with wear.

i used the smoke spray from streetbeatcustoms, and you really just get what you pay for. the stuff worked absolutely great and has not shown any sign of wear at all. here's an old pic of the truck with the tinted tails

(note: vinyl is gone, i also taped off my backup part of the lense, gives a nice touch, and i love it)

btw, 1 can will do the job just fine to get it like mine.

really though, its all the exact same junk. the 3.99 can of spray from walmart i tint things red with works beautifully and lasted through two minnesota winters already on two cars. go with the cheap stuff.

I used Night Shades, it's a VHT product. I picked it up at a local import (ricer) shop. They didn't carry it but they sold other VHT products so they ordered it for me. I think it was $12. So far it has lasted through two Chicago winters being outside 24/7.

some here have actually used spray inteneded to window tint radio control car body windows for lexan......

I would definatly NOT use the model tint spray. Ive used that stuff on the windows of my R/C car bodies, and it is the worst to use. It runs like crazy. Even if you apply a thin mist of the stuff, it will still cause runs. Its very hard to acheive to an even, run-free coat of that stuff. You would be best using something like niteshades, or that more pricey stuff that some of the "Tuner" shops sell.

Does that stuff come out glossy? I like the look of factory lights with the gloss, from the plastic. But I've seen a lot of cars with painted tails that look like $hit! They look all ruff like they just used black spray paint....Or maybe they did

Mine are just about as glossy as they were before the tinting. I usually polish and wax them when I do the rest of my car.

i got a ticket for that yesterday

You got a ticket for waxing your taillights? :D

Hi all:

I decided not to take chances with the cheap stuff. Ordered my VHT Nightshades yesterday. Thanks for all the advice.

Update - Put on 3 coats. Looks fantastic. Thanks again.

Regards,
John.
