i have 4.10 gears in my limited slip 4x4 and it just seems to have no power
with the stock tires i can light em up and burn em all the way down the road...
plus i wanna tow a boat without having to swap out my tires
anyone have 4.56 gears and how is your mpg and power?
i seem to get better gas mileage at 70 mph than 55 mph
i think some gearing would help me alot, just would like some input from people who have them
a pic for ya:

I have 4:56 gears. My mileage sucks with or with out them, since I have 35's. But it is better overall.

Last time I looked, 4.88's was the highest you could go because of what is available for the front axle.

yeh 4.56 is as much as i would go, it is my DD
didnt know if anyone else with 33's had 4.56 gears or not
i barely break 2k rpm at 65mph
i need to get back in the power band, i think itd actually help my mpg since it gets better mpg at higher speeds right now
but i mean im researching doing a Dana44 SAS right now, i want the kinda flex i get in the rear in the front.

I'm running 4.88's and 33's, and mine is a daily driver. Currently about a 35 mile commute each direction. Plenty of power, plenty of torque, tows well (just pulled a loaded up 6x14 from Oregon to Kentucky). Mileage is a pretty steady 14-15mpg no matter what I do,but I have a big roof rack with a spare tire on it and a tuner that probably makes it worse. Cruises comfortably at 70, keeps it right in the power band, tows great in overdrive. I pulled the trailer at 75mph a large part of the trip (10mpg average towing that thing).
4.56 gears would work awsome for you (keeps the over ratio about the same as stock). 4.88's would still be okay for a daily driver in my opinion, and gives you a little gearing advantage over stock. The only time I wished for 4.56 gears was on a long freeway trip when I wanted to drive 80+ for a long time. I also had 4.10's from the factory.

I posted my RPM at various speeds in OD and in 4th gear, but it's on offroadrangers and they are down right now. I'll try and get it when they're back up.

My Explorer is on 33's with 4.56's and it runs nicely. Got good power (for a 4.0 OHV Explorer) and my rpm's are just about right. Get 12-15 mpg's out of it.

The other thing to consider is that the SOHC likes higher RPMs.
I think 4.56 or 4.88's would work well. Probably wouldn't tell much difference between the two really.
I think I had about 2650rpm this morning at 70mph

I run about 2200-2300 rpm's at 65 in my truck. The OHV motor is quite happy there.

I have 35'' mtrs and 3.73 My truck is a turd until 43mph lol. i have actually got 17mpg out of it on 4 hour trips. my worst tank is still at 13 mpg because i dont hammer on it anymore with the ratio so far off. Oh and i pulled 112 on the gps with more to go lol

Have you considered cold air intake and performance exhaust. Also have you done the throttle cable mod?

My stock Ranger has 4.10 ratio, manual and 31s and I have plenty of power.

My trac also came with 4.10's and 30" tires stock. It was great back then. When I put the 33's on, it did "okay", but it definitely lost a lot. Intake and exhaust aren't going to make much difference when the truck is undergeared, except he would probably lose even more low end torque. He would have to rev the motor higher to take advantage of those mods, and the engine really isn't in it's powerband on the highway with those gears. It will downshift a lot climbing small hills on the highway, which causes extra wear on the transmission and motor.

Whats an estimate on the cost of a SAS conversion in the front? I'm sick of these damn torsion bars. I would be doing the labor myself so just the parts really...

Thanks! I searched sport trac and got nothing. Does any other ranger/explorer have the same front end as my 01 trac?

The 1995-2001(2nd Gen) Explorers have the same frontend. And yes the 3rd Gen Rangers have the same frontend also. I just don't know what year the 3rd Gen Rangers started. It might have been 1998. And of course the Explorer Sports from 1995-2003 have the same frontend.
