Anyone have a front diff fail before?

I just checked the paperwork I got from them and there was no mention whatsoever about adding oil, plus nobody there metntioned it to me that I needed to add it. I don't know, I'll call them after I tear it down and try and work it out with them next week. Until then, I'm going just try and not think about it.

Matt if you need any help whats so ever let me know. Ive got an ifs diff and an 8.8 sitting in my garage not being used so let me know. you can have the ifs diff if yours is messed up its not doing me any good.

Hate to say it Matt, but I think you took the responsibility to check during final assembly of the truck- which would include filling the diffs. When I had a former car axle regeared out of the vehicle it was not filled- the mechanic asked if I wanted it filled and I said no. When I bought a take out Explorer axle it came partially filled and needed a top off.
You should pull the diff and check it out. Im afraid Jefe is right the gears get really hot during break in, so condition is suspect.

ya what these guys said. with that IFS 35 you have to put it up before you fill it or oil will get all over the place. Unless you hold it just right all the time. Virtually impossible. If the carrier is messed up let me know I have the 35 from my X just sitting in my garage. No gears, but the carier is in tact. Sorry to hear of your misss fortune and good luck fighting it, they should have reminded you, but may have thought that since it was off the truck and you were putting it back on that you would fill it.

it was definately there fault you ask them if it would leak and they should have told you the diffs were empty...

check out thediff and see if anything went wrong or was ripped apart.
then if some things shot, and they won't fix it or atleast cut you a major deal on fixing it.

"Were was it stated, in writing, that I am resposible for adding my own diff oil?"

Yeah I poured over the reciept and there was nothing noted about oil anywhere. I'm sure these guys at the very least will do it again for free as long as I buy the gears, but the only problem is that it's in Philly which is quite a drive, so I may just ship it to them depending on how much shipping would be. Philly's a 3. something hour drive plus several $$ in tolls on the Midtown tunnel, Lincoln tunnel, NJ Turnkpike, PA Turnpike and there's a bridge I'm missing somehwere. Lefy, it won't turn into a baseball bat situation, only if they had been real assholes and didn't do the work or, I dunno, I can't imagine how it would turn into a baseball bat situation without them calling my mom names.

(oh yeah, and there's a 3" BL in there)

Its reasons like this why our country has so many stupid laws and so many stupid lawsuits. I agree that they should have said something, however there is no way they could have filled it without it spilling out all over. If you go and buy new brake pads and your brakes fail cause you put them on wrong is that the fault of the autoparts store?

Well, my main arguement was that when I was loading the front 35 into my other truck I had asked the guy who rebuilt them if gear oil was going to spill all over the place and if I should put something over the ends and he said "no because we put new seals in there so it won't leak" Not "no, there's no oil in there" He implied that there was oil in there and that it wouldn't seep out because of the new seals, so I believed him. I always though it was the half shafts that kept the oil in (and I was right) but when the guy who just rebuilt your axle says otherwise, you tend to believe him, hell that's why I didn't rebuild it myself. I know I'm stupid for not checking, and I would have if it had crossed my mind (actually I was going to take off the SVO diff cover off the white truck and put it on the black truck but figured I'd do that at a later time, now I really wished I would have done that since I would have opend up the rear and saw that there was no oil in there) I don't expect them to cover everything, but it would be nice if they would cover labor on it if I supply the parts or cut me some sort of deal.

I understand how one would have taken his comment to beleive there was diff fluid in there.

Did you drain the front diff before you handed it over to them?

I drained most of it, but I stuffed rags into the ends so that more wouldn't spill out.

So, the shop receives the diff empty, and then sees (assumes) that you had the common knowledge to drain the diff before transporting it, then wouldn't you know that you would also need to fill it once you got it installed back in?

Not trying to make you feel [more] stupid, just see the shops side of it. I say fight it. I just don't think you're going to see much sympathy from the shop.

I do see how the "no it won't leak" comment could be confusing, but I wouldn't have taken that to mean its full. . .but then again, I know what axle seals do and don't do.

As for the baseball bat comment. . that is totally uncalled for.

Just an update on this whole situation. I took out the front diff and sent it to them, I looked like the gears were ok but the pinion bearing was seized. They were very professional with me and wanted to do right, which was cool. So in the end, I had to pay an extra $83 to for new bearings that they installed for free. I will definatly do business with these people again, only I'll try and ask more questions in advance.

Sounds like the shop really treated you right. I'm glad it all worked out for you.

I have to say it is common knowledge that diff's/trans/whatever isn't filled by shops that you drop the stuff off to have it worked on. Of course if you drop the truck off it would be filled. Not trying to salt your wounds at all. Just saying that you got treated very right by the shop.
