This isn't related to my explorer, rather our Thunderbird. It's a 1994 Thunderbird with the 4.6L V8, LX model.

Anyhow, this ordeal started last year when my mother hit a deer. She drove it to Ted Britt Ford in Fairfax, VA. They gave us the name of a body shop about 20 miles away and we had them do the body work on it. The body shop took it from the dealership and we were contacted a week or so later by Ted Britt Ford and told that they had tried to start the car, but at this time it was out of oil. They didn't tell us, but I expect they didn't check it and of course it locked up without oil. Anyhow, they told us we needed a new engine. $6000 later, and a factory rebuilt 4.6L engine in the car and we were driving it once again.

That was last October. The engine now has about 15,000 miles on it, out of warranty, but that's beside the point. Well, this engine uses oil. It has a 6 quart oil capacity. My mother takes it to get the oil changed every 4,000 to 5,000 miles. Well, oil was changed about 3,000 miles ago. Yesterday I checked it and it didn't even show up on the dipstick. So I added a quart and we took it to a service station, where another 1+ quarts were added. (I was away from home so I only had one quart on hand.)

I told her to contact Ted Britt Ford when she got home and let them look for an oil leak, or to check for burning oil. The response from the Td Britt service manager was that we, "should expect the engine to use about 1 quart of oil every 900 miles."

Ted Britt ford is about the most respected ford dealership in northern VA. But this is really getting to me.

Let's calculate : It has a 6 quart oil capacity. 1 quart every nine hundred miles would equate to 5.5 quarts during a 5000 mile oil interchange. I have worked on countless cars and have never in my life seen a car use this much oil.

Needless to say I am tired of dealing with this. There are no oil stains under it, and there never have been.

I would like to know if anyone out there has dealt with a ford representative, and had a positive experience, and could provide me with a way to contact them. I would really like to confirm this 1-quart-per-900-miles usage now so I can start shopping for another first gen explorer to replace the T-bird.

Also, has anyone had a 4.6L engine like this?

Thanks, and sorry this is so long...
