my chiltons make it sound real easy. it says remove converter cover (Where the heck is that?!) Then it says rotate it till you find the drain plug. If anyone can offer me pointers (or pictures of where the heck this thing is located) I'd appriciate it!

I think we got a little off track....you're just changing the fluid not changing the converter right? You don't have to take the torque converter off to change the fluid. It's actually really easy (atleast on my last car, i haven't really looked at my X's torque converter). But anyways there's usually a little plastic shield at the front of the transmission that covers the bottom of the torque converter....just take that off and you see the torque converter. I'm assuming that's the way the explorer is anyways....i usually deal with GM's, and they're all that way. Just bump the starter till it spins around to where the drain plug is facing down, pull the drain plug and let it drain. I dont' recommend places that pump your fluid out...without dropping the pan they just leave all the metal shavings and crap in the bottom of the pan, but that's just my opinion. Plus then your old filter is still in there. It's a little messy but i certainly think it's worth doing yourself...you'll save some money and know it's done right.

On my 1998 I was able to drain the torque converter.

There is a plastic plug on the bottom of the bellhousing. I removed it and then "bumped" the engine until the torque converter drain plug was visable. I removed it and drained the torque converter.

The hardest part was bumping the engine until the drain plug was in the appropriate position.

Bottom of the 4R70W

IS this what your tranny looks like?

Your inspection cover on the 4R70W is the rubber plug and the task then is to rotate the convertor until the drain plug lines up with the hole...

I would recommend turning the engine with a wrench on the balancer bolt head...

There is no inspection cover as such nor a drain plug on the 5R55E or the 4R55E...

Boy this thread is confusing. I know you guys are wanting to help, so thanks!

The OP has a 4r70w transmission, which has a torque converter drain plug. You DO NOT!need to remove the torque converter.

ranger7ltr has it nailed in post 4

Thread cleaned up.
