as some of you know im getting a new 4.0 to replace my high milage one in my ranger. the new engine is for a 95-96(i think???) and has the black intake manifold. will i have any problems dropping it in the 94 ranger that origanally had the older 4.0 with the metal intake manifold?

basically what im asking is there any differences between the black intake manifold 4.0 and the metal intake manifold 4.0.

i don't think you'll have a problem. i think the plastic may have been having to do with ford cutting costs? i am not sure, but a 4liter OHV is a 4 liter OHV from what i understand.

The plastic intake is less expensive, lighter weight and acts as a temperature insulator, keeping the charge cooler.

So while it was a cost-cutting measure, there are actually good side affects!

Dont the newer ohvs 4.0 have more o2 sensors? U might have a problem if the computer was designed for 2 or 1 and the one u are getting has more.

The O2 Sensor is Part of the Exhaust system. The Engine is the Same. There is nothing Different about the Black itself. You could Use a 99' OHV in a 91 if you want. It would Bolt Right in.

cool, so all of the vacuum hoses that go to the intake manifold will plug in?

if not, the old intake manifolds(upper and lower) should bolt onto the new engine, right?

Well almost the same...

Well, for the most part all of the 4.0's are the same.

BUT... the 97 and up have a crank flange with 8 bolt holes rather than the 6 in the 96 and earlier. Which means that if you have the later model engine you need a flex plate or flywheel with the 8 holes. It should be easy to see if the engine is on a stand. Your 94 has 6 bolts.

Also the exhaust port shape was changed but the bolt holes are in the same location. So not a big deal.

I also believe that the cam shafts have different valve timing and lift for specific years- not a concern if you are swapping out the cam.

Also the combustion chamber and pistons are different, smaller combustion chamber on the later models. I believe the valve size is the same. I think this was on the 97's but it could be the 98's

Should be no problem with mounting the old manifold to the new engine, if you cant make the connections to the new intake. Someone posted that the old alum. intake was a bit better flowing than the new plastic- I have never seen the inside of one so I dont know.

So if the engine does have the 8 bolt crank flange you have something else to get, but everything else will bolt on to the basic engine assembly.
