Are Mountaineer and Explorer engines interchangeable?

1999 Ford Explorer XLT 4.0 4x4 in need of serious rebuild or new motor. I'm having a difficult time finding a 99/00 engine to replace it and didn't know if the Merc version was a possibility.

Nope, you can drop pretty much any explorer engine in.

You may need different harness's and intake if you wanted to move up to the V8's, but you shouldn't have to change much (if anything at all) if you go up on down on the years with just the 4.0
