I have a 2002 Ex with the standard audio system, cassette and cd radio. What I am wondering is if this truck has a RCU (radio control unit) that can easily be swapped for a higher end one out of a Aviator or higher end EX/MTN, which I am assuming has a much better sound system. I have done a similar swap on my taurus to the ford MACH audio and I am very pleased with the output, it puts the explorer to shame. I do not wish to do any aftermarket amps or power units as they are far too costly and by no means need it in the explorer.

My Ex shipped with the base system: No amp or sub.

I replaced the head unit & speakers. I didn't install an amp or sub. It sounds great, and was simple to swap out. Just a suggestion.

I was hoping that it would be a easy cheap swap similar to my Taurus. Swap out the low end RCU for the MACH RCU and you have an amazing upgrade for as cheap as $25, depending on the junkyard you get it from.

You have just left my area of expertise. Sorry I couldn't be more help.
