I'm a newbee and even after several hours I am overwhelmed by the info here. I picked up a 98 Explorer with 80K miles on and in excellent shape. It's a 4X4 XLT and has most the options that were offered. I've had Ford (and others) cars and PU's but this is my first SUV and I'm impressed and love it. My mechanic gave it a clean bill.
My problem is the automatic headlights quit working. They worked fine when I got it, but after disconnecting the battery overnight to fix the rear wiper motor, I can't seem to get them to work. I did a search and checked the fuses, looked at the Haynes manual(which had nothing) and still don't have an answer. Anyone have ideas? THANKS

I assume that your headlights come on with the headlight switch right???? Did you perhaps move the slider switch on your mirror to "off"?

yes the lights come on with the switch. I do have the slider switch to on. I'm guessing the problem is in that switch.

not necessarily. there are some relays involved which could be a problem.... in particular the headlight relay. In addition, you need to check the output from the auto lamp module (pin 2 W/P) to see if there is a ground on it when you think that your headlights are supposed to be on. If you aren't seeing a grd, then that is where your problem lies (or close there after). If you are seeing a grd then the headlight relay should be pulling up (ie. operated) and your lights should be on.

I've been trying to download the Ford manual and haven't got it to work yet. Can you expand on the test? For some odd reason it pisses me off that I have to reach up there and turn the lights on. Like a little excercise would hurt me. ;)
