I have a wierd problems with my hubs. I was out a couple weeks ago and they wouldn't lock in. I was on a hiking trip and ended having to walk a lot farther than I wanted. I had it in the shop for an unrelated problem last week and told them to take a look at the hubs. They said they locked in without a problem when it was on the rack. I took it right back out and tried driving up a dirt embankment. I couldn't get the front tires to spin at all. Is it possible that they could have spun while on the rack, but not when there is resistance? Any idea what would cause that?

Thanks!
Ed

Welcome to the site! I would try doing a search on the site...There are a million threads about the auto hubs...

In my opinion, there isn't much you can do, those hubs suck. and to make things worst they are costly. So. pay alot less and get a set of Warn manuals. you will never regret it. and you can use 4wd low with out being in 4wd

not much you can do about them... youll spend alot less just converting to manuals... and they are also more reliable.....

I agree, go with manual hubs if yours are toast. That is what I plan to do if my auto hubs ever take a crap!

whats the dif with manual and auto hubs?

Auto hubs engage automatically when you push/ turn the 4x4 on. X's 91-94 Rangers 87?-97. They suck, over time if you use you 4wd, system the hubs will start making clicking noises and they don't engage. Sometimes when they do engage, they will slip. Like if you where crawling over some rocks. on my 95 Ranger. I first noticed it at College when I went to get my truck that had been sitting for a few days with a foot of snow around it. I got in warmed it up, and turned on the 4wd. Proceeded to drive forward and my rear was slipping and my front was clicking. I don't know exactly, but the front tires need to roll a little before they lock. The couldn't. I was pissed, and later on I was climbing up a steep hill in 4wd and the 4wd kept slipping.
I bought a set of Warn hubs like $200.00 with kit and changed them out. Now I have to get out of my Truck and go and lock each hub. I kinda off like doing it. I Brings back meaning to "Ok, lock the hubs boys". I have a new 02 Ranger now, it it doesn't have any hubs, it is a live axle, thus always turning. I wish I could get some manuals on it.

I hope i explained it.
Auto you don't get out
Manual you go to each front wheel and turn knob

Newer jeeps and full size dodges have live axles as well.

Thanks

Thanks for the responses. I figured going to manual hubs would be the concensus opinion, just wanted to make sure.

I have pics of what wears on autohubs. Do you have an e-mail that will hold a few pics?
