Hi all.

I've done some searching in the Forums and found several very detailed and informative threads on adding the autolamp/autodimming mirror to Explorers, but have some questions...

It sounds like the simple way of getting autolamps is by splicing into the W/P wire in the large loom at the lower Driver Side e-brake area. It also sounds like this only works for vehicles with a RAP.

Question 1: Is the "simple splice mod" only valid for RAP equipped vehicles?

Question 2: What model years came with RAPs? The reason I ask is '96explorereddiebauer' was able to do the simple install on his '96 and 'Hoppy' had to use relays on his '97. Was the RAP optional equipment or part of a Trim level, e.g. Eddie Bauer and XLT but not XLS or XL..

Question 3: Has anyone out there successfully made this mod to a Sport Trac? Was it the simple splice or adding relays?

I just picked up a mirror off of a '96 Windstar with on/off button and slide and am anxious to get it working on my '01 ST.

Thanks for your help!!!

I also found out that late 2001's had a CSM instead of a RAP. Both show in the same circuit, and appear to have the same function.

Has anyone done this mod on a Sport Trac? Anyone? Anyone?

bump

Further, it sounds like splicing into the w/p wire will only light the parking lamps unless the vehicle comes with the autolamp feature and associated relay.

Does anyone know if the 2002 STs with autolamps have the same wiring as a 2001 (autolamps not offered), i.e. can I just plug in a 2002 headlamp relay into the correct location on my 2001?

If someone has a 2002 wiring diagram for autolamp, convenience package equipped ST, please help!!

I would prefer to install the mirror I have (which works) instead of buying the OE kit at ~$70....

I just did this mod to my 98 Mounty. Everything works. I was able to get constant power and switched power from the OHC. I ran the W/P wire down to the bundle under the sill plate and tapped it there. From my readings it seams that if your truck has Keyless entry then all you have to do is just splice the wire and it will work.

Cougar,

I do have keyless entry. I will give it a shot, though, I am a little skeptical, since there appears to be no wiring/relay for headlamps connected to the RAP.

Another thing: when I push the panic button, only the park lamps flash, not the headlamps, which seems to confirm that the RAP doesn't control the headlamps...

Can you check your owner's manual to see if you have a headlamp relay in your box? If you do, what location is it in?

I will try this weekend to get the auto-dim mirror working, at least...

Thanks for your help!

I'll do that as soon as I can.

I don't think my truck flashes the headlamps when the alarm goes off either.

Also you can tap the R/Y wire to the Gray/Y wire in the OHC. The Green/Y wire can go to the Green/O wire for the visors as it has power all the time. That makes getting the auto dim working easily.

I did mine in the garage last night without a snag.

2000 Sport/2001 ST or Sport Auto Dim

Just installed the auto lamp/auto dim mirror today.

The auto dim functions perfectly; a really simple connection.

But as I suspected, the autolamp does not work with the splice into the w/p wire under the sill/kick.

I bench tested the assembly and everything worked, so I guess I'll need to wire some relays to the switch or something....

I'll ask again; has anyone gotten this to work on a 2001 ST or Sport with Keyless, Convenience package, and RAP without wiring separate relays?

Looking to do the same in my 2002 ST, anybody done this? Thanks
