1996 Explorer XLT Conversion - The autolock system just stopped working. When you put your Ex into gear and let off the brake, the locks will drop all'round. Mine don't anymore. I just noticed it Wednesday, ONE day before my torque converter BLEW UP! Any relation? I can't manually lock them from the switches on the front doors OR exterior keypad/keyfob. HOWEVER, they WILL lock from the switch on the left-rear quarterpanel and they UNlock with no problem using any of the above switches & keypads. I looked up some info in the HAYNES repair manual and noticed that both the lock system and transmission utilize the GEM (General Electric Module) behind/beside the radio. Anybody got a clue b4 i go to FORD to PAY to get this checked out??? Also, I had installed about one year ago an autostart module, but that's working just fine. I've gotta believe it's related to my unfortunate & expensive tranny issues, but the shop couldn't figure it out either. Please help!

any luck with the lock issue? nobody out there is lookin' out, i guess. Check to see that all your doors are closing properly. In thinking about other issues that i am having (i posted a new thread), i realized that problems with my hatch not closing properly (giving me a door ajar light) would cause the autolock system to not engage. I've got to replace the complete hatch lock/latch mechanism (all rusted, broken, loose) and hopefully it'll solve at least two of my problems...i'll keep you posted

I work out of my vehicle daily and I have the opposite problem. I wish mine would STOP autolocking every time I get in and out (about 60 times a night). But if certain methods work for lock/unlock but not others, it may be a wiring problem.

You can disable the system with a couple clicks of the lock button and turns of the key...i believe the instructions are in the owners manual...they're on here too! i tried it on mine to try and "jump start" my lock system to no avail...search for it...it's definitely on here somewhere

Do the following within 30 seconds

1. turn the ignition to "on" but do not start it
2. Press the door unlock 3 times
3. turn the ignition to off
4. press unlock 3 more times
5. turn the ignition to "on" (but do not start it)
* the horn will sound once to indicate a proper deactivation; twice to activate;

here's a link - scroll about 1/2 the way through and there's instructions for it:

Ken,

I know this thread goes back quite a bit, but have you figured out the lock issue? Did you try the enable/disable code to get it to work again? Do you have an autostart module installed in your X?

Chris

i looked through my paper work for my truck and saw there were instruction on how to enable/disable the feature on the card that had the key code for my keypad entry. problem solved. here's what you gotta do:

enter your permanent keypad code on the door pad then within 5 seconds depress the 3/4 while holding 7/8 key.

try that. the horn will honk when its doen. i hope it works
