Unless you have fairly vast experience along the lines of major vehicle re-working, you are asking for the worst headaches you've ever had. There you have one of the ideas you asked for. Want some more, please ask! imp

Your best bet is to find a pickn pull with a 96(possibly 97?) Explorer with a manual trans. I believe you'll need the entire engine harness. and ECM. Take everything from that that you'll need and bolt it up. It's a pretty easy swap if you can find the wiring and ECM that you need. There's a thread in the first gen section that you can check out. The mechanical will be the same for your truck.

Let's not forget all the **** associated with installing a clutch pedal assembly, clutch master cylinder, hydraulic line down to the slave cylinder, hole in floor for shift lever, clutch pedal actuated start switch, have I missed anything? imp

Correct, that's why I referred him to the first gen swap page. Outlines how to handle the mechanics of the swap as they will be identical. Clutch pedal/skinny brake is fairly easy to install, the hole is cut for the master cylinder so that is bolt in which will include the reservoir and hydraulic line to the slave, there is a block off plate on the floor that is simple to remove and either cut a hole for the shifter or swap the 5 speed one over. You will also need the manual trans starter as it's different.

The difference will come down to how it's wired. The first gen is simple as pie as the trans harness is separate from the engine harness and is a matter of 4 connectors to change. The clutch switch(included with a new master) plugs into a harness under the dash. Again in the first gen this is wired in regardless if you have an auto or a manual. A resistor is just placed in it if you have an auto. I don't know if the second gens are similar or not.

I will reiterate that if you can find a complete donor this would be a fairly straight forward swap. It may seem intimidating at first but after completing one I would feel very confident in saying this is a weekend swap if you have all the parts a head of time.

YOUR knowledge suggests YOU could pull it off. But are you doing an injustice making a poor guy lacking your experience think HE can pull it off as easily as you might be able to? imp

Considering I had no idea what I was doing when I started it and using basic hand tools, it is possible. There's plenty of documentation on the forum is you SEARCH. You'll know of all the parts that will be required.

I would assume that someone who is willing to remove and replace a transmission has basic skills and tools in order to do so.

You are probably right in that. I apologize for criticizing. I just hesitate to encourage someone to enter into something that might tax their abilities, and wind up a bust for them. imp
