1992 Explorer 4X4
Hello,

I have a 1992 Explorer 4x4 with an auto trans and recently it started what seems to be downshifting to a lower gear on its own when driving down the street. Havent had any other issues with the trans since I have owned it which has been several years now. When I first got the Expo I replaced the trans modulator but this was a while back.

It shifts down a gear, RPMs go up then it will shift back to the correct gear shortly after. Seems to be random but will always do it when I drive it now. Other problem it has is that the gear shift lever does not line up with the gear selector indicator on the dash. Meaning that when its in reverse the indicator is slightly off. Also when I turn the truck on I need to make sure the shift lever is forced a little towards the Park position. Trans has not been serviced since I have owned it.

Hope this makes sense. Anyone know what the problem might be?

Thanks

when you are driving, you noticed if the speedometer needle, takes a few small jumps? As it stops, it falls and returns to its normal position. Just as a reference, what you mention, it happened to me with my Explorer, and it was the gear of the speed sensor that was damaged.

Been busy and havent had any time to do anything to the Expo. Thanks Alfilrey. I'll see if that is it. I don't recall if the speedometer makes that jump. I'll check it out and post later what I find out.

Which gear is this happening in?
